Reflecting My Experience on Australian Culture Using Gibbs Model
Introduction
I belong to a Sikh family, where values of Sikh Culture run high, although in the last couple of months I have been experiencing Australian culture, which has offered me a rare chance of assessing the cultural difference there is and the evaluation of my cultural intelligence levels. I came to Australia a couple of months back for studying and have been staying in the country since then. As my completion of studies will still take considerable amount of time, I will be staying in the country for a while. In the current reflective report, I will be sharing my experience in context of two different cultures.
Description
In terms of the particulars of each culture are concerned, I noticed within a short period in Australia, couples kissing in public and young adults drink in front of their parents and elders, making me uncomfortable in public. In Sikh Culture, the display of love and affection is very Platonic in public. On the other hand, in Sikh cultures, family planning tends to be less concerned about population control, something the Australians have taken very sincerely. The striving towards a career is more of a choice than a necessity, giving students a wider scope of pursuing passion. I also noticed the absence of caste-system, which is somewhat dominant in Sikh Culture. I also saw that death of loved ones is accepted more easily than in Sikh Culture. Along with the seemingly differences, both Australian and Sikh culture have certain similarities, hinting at their universalistic features. In both cultures, people wait for their respective religious holidays and spend money to have fun. The practice of visiting Church is very similar to that of visiting a Gurudwara. Although showing of respect towards elders, in both cultures are different in their approach, however, they do show respect to their coaches, trainers and teachers, very similar to Sikh cultures, which only does that more strictly than those of the Australian.
Feelings
Seeing the most drastic differences in the Sikh and Australian culture, I felt that Australians do have higher levels of pragmatic perspective towards life than emotional attachments. The higher degree of pragmatism in Australian cultures helps the people to develop a more individualistic approach towards society and life. Whereas, Sikh cultures, the emotions, traditions and heritage contribute in the development of communitarism in the society. Being a Sikh, I felt uneasy, when people accepted tragedies in life with ease or did not show emotional outburst, moving on in life and focusing on other things in life. I also felt that natural urges of age and the liberty of individuals was not marred by the restrictions imposed by elders of the community or family. I enjoyed the liberty of the Australian culture and pursued many things alongside my studies, which in Sikh culture might have been considered taboo. I felt that in Sikh culture families and society play a larger role in regulating the action of...
