Employ
ee relations is an important aspect of every workplace. A good employee relation ensures proper interaction between employers and employees, hold responsibilities toward educating and supporting the employees, and creating a good workplace environment that encourages productivity and positive morale. Employee relations also attempts to resolve conflicts associated with misunderstanding and misconduct within the workplace premises. In the chosen companies, namely, Ford Motor Company and Marriott International Inc., there are instances of inclusivity and diversity in the workplace. As a result of their progressive mindset, they have been able to carve a niche for individuals with different sexual orientation. This aspect is alone enough to build a good employee relation between the employers and employees. This paper explores three aspects; the laws that address gender identity and sexual orientation, the way in which the current law is being applied and examples from the current work scenario.
Laws that Address Discrimination based on Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation
    Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a federal law that prohibits discrimination or differential treatment based on gender identity and sexual orientation. This federal law also prohibits discriminatory behaviour on the basis of race, colour, religion and nationality. There are also a number of states that have separate policies and laws against gender identity and sexual orientation discrimination. According to Henry and Steiger (2019), American cities with greater gender inclusivity and equality have more progressive gender identity and sexual orientation laws and services. The results in this research show that the cities which show shorter gender-based wage gap tend to have more progressive sexual orientation laws and policies. The above-mentioned companies, namely Ford Motor Company and Marriott International Inc. encourage gender equality and respect the sexual orientation of the employees. Their policies are based on the federal law, that is, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
    According to Prayson and Rowe (2019), workplace ought to be an environment where people feel safe and stay focused on the way in which they can get the work done. However, in most of the cases this is not how events take place in the workplaces. Based on the same research, it has been found out that four out of ten lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer and/or questioning (LGBTQ) individuals report feeling bullied at work (Prayson & Rowe, 2019). However, both Ford and Marriott International Inc. respect gender identity and sexual orientation of the individuals in the workplace, leading to building up of a safe workplace environment encouraging inclusivity and diversity. Ford, for instance, has a zero-tolerance policy which reinforces its commitment to a safe, harassment-free work environment for all the employees. They believe in creating a brand where trust, integrity and transparency rule at the highest point.
