INNOVATIVE RESPONSIBLE ENGAGED In-Workshop Activity 1: What type of leader are you? • Stand up and randomly find someone in your class. • Introduce yourself to your peer and ask the question. • How do you find your leadership style, compared to your peer’s style? INNOVATIVE RESPONSIBLE ENGAGED 6 Leadership Styles by Goleman D. (2000) 1. Coercive Style – This is a “do what I say” approach and is most effective when operating in crisis mode. This style can come off as very dictatorial and should be used sparingly because it can quickly dampen a team member’s motivation. 2. Authoritative Style – This style suggests the team member “come with me” approach. This approach defines the overall goal but empowers people to choose the means of achieving it. 3. Affiliative Style – The affiliative style places people first. This style builds team harmony and employee morale. INNOVATIVE RESPONSIBLE ENGAGED 6 Leadership Styles by Goleman D. (2000) 4. Democratic Style – This gives team members a voice but this style can also come at the expense of endless meetings and team members feeling leaderless. 5. Pacesetter Style – This style has a tendency to come off as dominating by setting and living to high standards. Team members that are self-motivated and highly competent accept this style as positive, while others may see the style as overwhelming and frustrating due to unrealistic expectations. 6. Coaching Style – This style focuses on individual development. It works well for team members that are aware of their weaknesses, but doesn’t when they are resistant to changing their ways. INNOVATIVE RESPONSIBLE ENGAGED Why Project Leadership? • No substitute for understanding the fundamental tools and techniques of project management. • BUT, leadership and related ‘soft skills’ are increasingly important for effective project leaders or project managers. • What is leadership? INNOVATIVE RESPONSIBLE ENGAGED In-Workshop Activity2: Project Life Cycle • In a group of 3-4 students, discuss each stage of project life cycle. • Providing examples, what characteristics do you know about each stage? INNOVATIVE RESPONSIBLE ENGAGED Leaders vs Managers • What does a project leader do? • Creates a team environment that promotes higher performance; • Builds and maintains effective relationships; • Mentors and motivates team members; • Takes accountability for project delivery; • Uses influencing skills when required; • Identify problems to be solved (effective); • Pull (inspire/persuade) followers. • How is this list similar to or different than your traditional ideas of managers? INNOVATIVE RESPONSIBLE ENGAGED Transformational vs Transactional Leadership • Transactional leadership achieves mutual goals through an element of bargaining and trading off favours or energies/resources between the leader and followers. Honesty, fairness, and honouring commitments are essential for this form of leadership to be effective. • Transformational leadership can elevate and educate followers to look beyond their immediate motives, values and needs to be concerned with end-values, such as justice, equality, sustainability. INNOVATIVE RESPONSIBLE ENGAGED Transformational vs Transactional Leadership • Keegan and Den Hartog (2004), transformational leadership usually involves: • a strong personal identification with the leader; • the creation of a shared future vision; • a relationship between leaders and followers based on more than just an exchange of rewards for compliance. • Transformational leadership is more similar to traditional ideas of leadership, whereas transactional leadership is more similar to traditional management. • However, highly effective leaders use both transformational and transactional behaviours. INNOVATIVE RESPONSIBLE ENGAGED Transformational Leadership • A common model of transformational leadership (e.g., Bass & Riggio, 2006) posits four components: • Idealised influence – leader serves as a role model • Inspirational motivation – leader inspires and motivates • Individualised consideration – leader shows genuine and personal concern for followers • Intellectual stimulation – leader challenges followers to be innovative and creative INNOVATIVE RESPONSIBLE ENGAGED In-Workshop Activity 3: Transformational vs Transactional Leadership • In a group of 3-4 students, pick one of the following leaders. • Joseph McCarthy • Martin Luther King Jr • Charles de Gaulle • Wendy Kopp • Indra Nooyi • Search online (Google the name) and address the following questions: • What is the leadership style of the chosen leader? • What characteristics did you find for the chosen leader? Question 1: Do you think a project manager (ignoring the other leadership roles for this exercise) can employ a specific leadership style for a given project life cycle stage? Why or why not?
Answer 1:
In each stage of project management, different competencies are needed within the project leader for the successful execution of each phase of the life cycle. Moreover, depending on the stages of team development in each PM stages, a leader must adjust his/her leading approaches. In this phase, it is important for a leader to be creative, exploratory, and visionary and focus on communication and giving direction. At this stage, a leader can follow the element of Idealized influence (II) and Inspirational Motivation (IM) of transformational leadership where he/she should create confidence, motivation, and expertise among the team members (Keegan & Den Hartog, 2004). Here, the leader may follow the Telling (S1) and Selling (S2) model of leadership of situational leadership strategy as well (depending on the...
