Introduction
As technology has been evolving at a very fast pace, it has become essential for business organisations to include this technology into their business operations so that their processes can be optimi
sed leading to effective utilisation of the available resources. Moreover, with the increasing competition in the industry, businesses have to expand their business operations and mange them with higher efficiency. In such cases, organisations mostly prefer to make use of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems for managing their business functions with a centralised and integrated system. These systems have been enabling companies, which work within the supply chain to keep a record and track of manufacturing and distribution. ERP systems are turning out to be the backbone of the technology systems deployed by most of the business organisations. In this report, we shall discuss about the case of Walmart and its implementation of ERP systems. This report will further discuss about the strategic factors associated with the planning, design and implementation of ERP systems.
Company Background
Walmart is a multinational retail corporation with its headquarters in America. This multination corporation operates as a chain of hypermarkets, grocery stores and discount department stores. The mission of Walmart can be summarised as assisting people around the globe to save money and therefore, help them to live better lives anytime and anywhere, primarily through ecommerce. The vision of Walmart focuses on making very day lives of busy people easier (Walmart, 2020). In order to achieve the mission of the organisation and to strategically develop business strategies around the vision, Walmart has been leveraging extensively on information technology and therefore, has decided to come up with ERP systems to optimise and unify its business functions on a single platform. This move of Walmart has brough the organisation closer to its mission.
Analysis of Two Cases of ERP Implementation in Walmart
From the first case study that has been analysed it can be inferred that Walmart has managed to position itself among the top ten companies in the United States particularly speaking in the terms of market capitalisation. In order to compete against its toughest and closest competitor Amazon, Walmart came up with a number of digital transformation measures, among which implementing ERP systems was the most prominent one. Walmart has been operating with a number of brick and mortar stores and includes hundreds of brands. In order to keep its shelves stocked and its warehouses full of material, Walmart has been working closely with thousands of suppliers. Furthermore, Walmart has also been giving tough competition to competitors like Amazon through its e-commerce business by maintaining online seller partnerships.
In order to manage all these operation with greater efficiency and synchronise its various business functions on a single platform, Walmart decided to come up with ERP implementation. Though the business size of Walmart has turned out to be its biggest advantage, it turned out to be a major challenge, when it comes to ERP implementation at Walmart. Walmart has been working with many ERP providers to ensure that its strategic moves turn out to be successful. One of its recent partnerships in the year 2018 was with Microsoft Azure (Investopedia, 2020). This partnership focused on the following digital transformations at Walmart:
· Walmart plans for coming up with an ERP system based on cloud services to serve as a framework for managing all of its resources
· The retail giant also focuses on integrating its existing ERP application with the framework being provided by Microsoft Azure
· Integration of Microsoft 365 with other applications and softwares
· Walmart further focuses on coming up with broader and more efficient opportunities for e-commerce with this partnership
· Walmart also seeks opportunities for automated warehousing capabilities with this partnership
· Integrating Microsoft Azure with the existing ERP applications of Walmart will help this retail chain use artificial intelligence for supplier relationships
· Walmart aims at improving its inventory management solutions with the integration of SAP Hana along with other ERP application
· The company further aims at coming up with blockchain-based solutions, which are evolving rapidly (Pham, 2018)
Another case study that has been analysed to develop an in-depth understanding of ERP planning and implementation at Walmart sheds light on the fact that Walmart has been including ERP software for the purpose of business process reengineering. The ERP systems that have been implemented by Walmart aim at transforming the relationship of Walmart with their supply chain partners. The case study further highlights that Walmart focused on integration of ERP systems for the purpose of improving their internal processes and to optimise their supply chain channels. After Walmart implemented these ERP systems, they managed to achieve higher levels of customer satisfaction and the revenues...
