Introduction
    Leadership is one of important skills needed in nursing. In a nursing, nurses need to manage many people and handle many situations. All these can be possible only when an individual has personal attributes, which can be contributed to develop leadership skills. These skills play is necessary in every profession mainly for those who are handling more than three people in their team or part of a team. It has been said that leaders are by born but it is not always true. Situations can help people in discovering their leadership skills. People can be developed leadership skills by developing personal attributed.
Literature review
Nursing practice demand some peculiar personal attributes, which are required to develop leadership skills and help in managing interpersonal relationship. As noted by Thomas and Revell (2016), personal attributes helped in development of the personality of the individual, which help in personal and professional aspects. There are many kinds of personal attributes, which are either already present in individual or they learnt in their life as per the demand of the profession. As suggested by Chan (2014), interpersonal attributes and leadership skills are necessity of nursing practices. It has been suggested that for nurses to perform well and handled the client properly the needs to develop interpersonal attributes and leadership skills.
Critical thinking, self-reflection and effective communication are necessary equipment of the nursing practice, which are tested regularly in dealing with patients and their family. As noted by Mannix, Wilkes and Daly (2013), effective clinical leadership develops the healthy and supportive work environment for healthcare professionals. It states that leadership has been linked with quality care provided to the patients. personal attributes of nurses helped them in formation of good relationship with their fellow colleagues. For example, nurses who shows empathy towards their patients and remain composed in handling the sudden deteriorating condition of the patient, helps in providing better care.
They can provide relief to the family of the patients that can satisfy them about the ongoing treatment. On contrary, lack of effective communication failed to provide satisfaction among patients and their families to accept the treatment or situation completely as they don’t trust the nursing staff (Gluyas, 2015). As mentioned by Scully (2015), nursing is a profession, which is very challenging and needs role models and leaders for necessary guidance to help the patients. guidance helps fellow nursing staff to support themselves in critical situations. Handle the critical cases and failure with courage. As mentioned by Persaud and Bonham (2018), leadership and personal attributes in nursing allow them to formed the trustworthy relationship with the patient.
This trustworthy relationship is necessary for the long-term quality treatment to the patients. this relationship provides assurance to the patients that healthcare is providing all the necessary help needed for the patients. this relationship can be therapeutic in taking care of the patients. it helps in identifying the suicidal or any other risky behavior of the patients. these behaviors can be violent in nature.
