We are ask to look at the technologies of a WAN, but personally I feel that one must understand what WAN (Wide Area Network) is, A WAN is a large Network of information that is not tied to one location. WANs can facilitate communication, the sharing of information and much more between devices from around the world through a WAN provider. These network are often established by service providers that then lease the WAN to businesses,, schools, governments, or the public. Access can be granted via different links such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) or lines, wireless Networks, cellular networks, or internet access.

Though WANs cover a wide area, connections can be either wired or wireless. Wired WANBs usually consist of broadband internet services and multiprotocol label switching, which is a form of data forwarding technology used to controltraffic flow and speed up connection, while wireless WANs normally include 4G/5G and Long-Term Evolution(LTE) networks.

Wired WAN Pros and Cons

The pros generally revolve around security. In a wired network architecture, devices must be physically wired into the network, making it more difficult for cyber attackers to gain unauthorized access. Additionally, with a physical connection organizations can control the number of devices that have access to the network, the risk of malware potentially infecting the infrastructure is reduced. The other benefit is speed. Unlike a ireless system that can be subject to outside interference, a wired network allows for faster connection. The cons involve hardware. The more cabled connections, the more wire to manage. Further, when using cabled network, employees an only gain access when there is a physical connection available, limiting mobility.

Wireless WAN Pros and Cons

The benefits of a wireless WAN are the opposite. The workplace can be anywhere giving employees flexibility. The cons include both risk, as wireless networks are generally more vulnerable to attack, and speed, as wireless networks are often slower.

But let us look back at the beginning of WAN. I can remember the dial-up services that allowed for the connection to the internet. At that time we were using Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS), (G. Sowell, Network Foundations, 2021, Linked-In). You would have to place the phone receiver on a modem and you would hear this screeching sound before you could connection to the internet.

Modem stands for modulation and demodulation. It takes a digital signal modulated to an analog signal and reverses the processes on the other end,

In conclusion there are so many developments that were invented to optimize the WAN and to speed up the data that traveled over both the LAN and WAN. I am sure that we will be able to discuss some of the other protocols. We will also be able to discuss switching androuting.

we were asked to look into a scenario as if we are the individual responsible for designing a network at a large organization. Within this network this network I must ensure it would entail connectivity between sites within the Africa, Europe, Japan, and the USA in addition to enclosed regions. Specifications for remote-access and Wide Area Networks (WAN) technologies must be provide for how and what I would employ to accomplish transmission of data between global markets. WANs are networks that a great deal of our digital era technology society is contingent on when it comes to virtual connectivity. WANs are enormous networks that utilizes various forms of links to communicate, collect, and relay information to any location through a WAN service provider. In addition, the priorly mentioned description of WANs they are utilized as a form of data-sharing, meaning when a computer wishes to communicate with another computer or server outside of a LAN, a WAN is utilized. Let’s think about the process of transmitting emails, when an email is created and then send from the sending end-user to the targeted receiver, the processor is communicating with the server it moves from creation to a stored state, to a server, back to a stored position wasn’t in the receiver’s inbox and the viewed by the recipient. This type on network consists of various connection types such as the IoT, private lines, MPLS, VPNs, and Wi-fi to enable the possible of connections to a diverse set of locations of a solitary distributed network.(Apcela, 2022)

When it comes to the types of WAN there are numerous types to consider. All of which have different capacities that aid in network performance, reliability, security, speed, and even cost. To give an idea of some of the many different common WAN technologies utilized today that one may consider includes but are not limited to:

  • Asynchronous Transfer Mode or ATM which is formation of a switching technique that is utilized by multiple telecommunication networks that support data, video, and voice communications.

  • Frame Relay which is a formation of packet-switching in addition to cost-efficient telecommunication services that transmits data between LANs and/or between various endpoints within WANs.

  • Multiprotocol Label Switching or MPLS is what is known as a network routing-optimization technique which regulates data from one node to that of the subsequent node utilizing short path labels.(Apcela, 2022)

  • Packet switching which is a known method of data transmission in which messages are fragmented into distinct components, known as packets, that are transmitted autonomously and reconstructed once it reaches its destination. Afterwards they are verified through and through by a procedure which confirms the data was transmitted properly.

  • Routers which is networking device typically utilized to interconnect LANs to form a WANs. IP routers utilize IPv4 or IPv6 addresses to determine where to send the packets.

When considering what kind of WAN designs to implement, it’s crucial to notate that the design should illustrate the needs the company’s functions. The anticipated package presented should summarize the desired service provided by each WAN technology implemented, and some of those keys to WAN design are assessing the existing network, creating the topology, identifying the network constraints. Therefore, while keeping this in mind, I would go with an SD-WAN. Over the past few years this formation of WAN technologies has been making its way into the scene and also known as a software-define wide area network. This explanation is often marketed as a cost-efficient method, but in addition to this it also has the ability to leverage various types of WAN connections by aggregating bandwidth all while optimizing business-essential traffic. So, in short, this solution presents all the benefits of an MPLS network and more without having to only leverage MPLS connections.(Enable IP, 2022) Numerous SD-WAN service providers allow organizations to utilize what is referred to as hodge-podge connections, ranging from DIA and broadband to MPLS connections. When being utilized in conjunction with MPLS, it is frequently utilized as a duplicate and/or replacement. More accurately there is no need to limit yourself system to MPLS infrastructures it is better to go for a more competitively priced trustworthy bandwidth such as this one allowing us to prioritize traffic and aggregate bandwidth. A well-managed SD-WAN solution typically consist of a substantial one-time investment, the majority suppliers will extend it as a remunerated contribution with the same terms associated with your current paths. The true value in SD-WAN is its ability to secure much more bandwidth for your users while spending roughly the same amount of money, and this is despite rather or not you select a cap-ex or a op-ex. This in addition to optimization and prioritization topographies that it bargains it has become uncomplicated to comprehend why it has developed into such a disruptive factor within the market.
