HN BIOLOGY 3RD QUARTER PROJECT GENETICALLY ENGINEERING THE ULTIMATE PREDATOR Imagine you have been asked to help design a new animal for a zoo. The zoo investors are looking for the “Ultimate Predator” to bring in visitors. They have invited you to pitch an idea for this creature based on your knowledge of genetic engineering & transgenic organisms. You should design a poster, tri-fold brochure, video advertisement, or other media presentation (NOT POWERPOINT) that describes your predator, the methods you will use to create it, and persuades the zoo investors that your predator is the best. Your presentation should include the following: · A clear, written description of the physical traits of your predator, including · What it looks like · Where it lives – if you were to find it outside the zoo, what kind of habitat or ecosystem would it inhabit? The desert of North America? The rainforests of Brazil? The oceans off Japan? What part of these habitats? In the trees? In extremely deep water? · What it eats, including how it hunts, kills, and consumes its prey · A picture of your predator. This should be hand-drawn and colored in. · You should emphasize the traits included in your written description. · Propose related species to use to create your predator from, and explanations why you chose those species. · Propose & explain how you are going to copy the DNA/genes from the animals you are going to use to create your predator. (Explanation of PCR/Transformation) · Propose & explain a method to fill in the gaps in the DNA or how you are going to combine the genes to create your predator (Explanation of Gene Splicing) · Propose & explain a method for producing / cloning more of your predator. (Explanation of Cloning) · Assuming your predator is a success, how you are going to introduce genetic diversity into the species so it can survive. (A Punnett Square crossing 2 traits and including likelihood for the offspring getting the trait) · You should include probabilities for the likelihood of obtaining certain traits. · A component addressing the ethics involved with genetic engineering and possible risks or impacts creating this animal may bring about the zoo investors may not have considered. · A separate citation page with a minimum of 5 resources. · 2 of these 5 resources should be scientific journal articles.
