A variety of mental disorders have been linked to criminal activities. Is it
appropriate to incarcerate someone with a mental disorder? Are they “getting
away with crime” if they are housed in a mental health facility instead of a
prison?
It is rightly said that variety of mental disorders have been linked to criminal
activities but it won’t be correct to say that any person with some sort of mental
disorder would have some violent or criminal tendency. Hence, it won’t be justified to
think mentally ill people as criminal. On the other hand mentally ill people needs the
support of society. Criminality and Mental disorder are two separate issues and these
two issues should not be mixed (Kaprinis, 2008, pp 90). There can be cases when
some mentally ill people are involved in criminal activities but this does not imply
that every mentally ill people are a criminal. It would be highly inappropriate to
incarcerate someone just because he or she is mentally ill.
