A) Your core values
1. What are your core values?
1. Determine your core values
2. Group similar values together
3. Choose one value to represent group
4. Add a verb to each value to turn it into an actionable value
5. Arrange values in order of priority
A PDF file with the core values listed on the webpage has been added to Blackboard to make it easier for you to complete the task.
Document the answer to each step of the process and include them as an appendix to your submission.
2. Core values reality check
State your core values in order of priority as identified from the process outlined in section 1. In addition, offer a reflection on your experience of completing the task, e.g. What was surprising? Easy? Difficult? in a single paragraph.
Answer the questions below grouped around each individual core value, i.e. state value and then offer answer to each question rather than stating question and then answers for each core value
Are you living your life in line with your core values? Offer an honest assessment of the expression of each core value in your life at present. Give a specific example of the presence and/or absence of the core value in your life.
What is one specific action which you will take for each core value to embody it even more in your life? Give a specific example and highlight how it is an expression of the core value.
What are the implications of each core value for a workplace choice? Identify at least one workplace characteristic for the core value that is an expression of the core value being present in a workplace, e.g. if the core value is family a workplace characteristic might be a subsidised onsite crèche to support working parents.
3. Your core value of choice
Select one of your core values that you want to work with over the course of the module, including the block sessions. It might be the one which is least evident in your life at the moment which makes this a good dare – but it does not have to be if you feel that this would be too much of a challenge.
How will you live in line with your core value during the module? Identify specific actions that are expressions of the chosen core value for each the various aspects of a university module:
o communicating with peers, facilitators, administrators (spoken/written)
o contributing to face to face sessions
o completing tasks with others
o preparing/completing assessments on your own
Be specific yet creative and think outside of the box! This can include actions that require the help of others – in that case, include how you might be able to get that help, often it simply involves asking.
To conclude clearly state your commitment to live in accord with your chosen core value for the duration of this module. Starting now!
B) Your learning joys and challenges
Learning takes place at the edge of your comfort zone - it does not happen when you have fallen over the edge into the panic zone. Fun and playfulness can make it easier to learn. Knowing where your edge is can be helpful to shape your learning experience.
Tell me about an event in your life which illustrates joy of learning for you – being challenged but in a way which made it possible for you to succeed. Be clear on what you learned and what made learning joyful, fun in this instance.
Tell me about an event in your life which gives me insight into how learning can be a challenge for you. Be clear on what you learned – or tried to learn - and what made learning difficult. Include what you did to help you learn in this situation, to overcome the challenge – or in the event that this was not the case, looking back, what would you do now to help you learn?
One way to approach this task is to look at your life from the outside in like a scientist in a lab. This is not about blaming a person – including yourself – or a situation, it is simply about assessing what worked and what did not work for you in relation to learning.
C) Random fact
Tell me one thing about yourself that tells me something about you as a person that is not evident from looking at you – something that is a bit unusual or quirky in the best possible way!
Be precise in your work and edit it for comprehension and clarity – there is no set word count yet your writing has to be clear, precise and to the point. A rambling stream of consciousness is not an acceptable approach. Keep the reader in mind – me – and provide the detail that is necessary to understand the point that you are trying to make while at the same time leaving out unnecessary embellishments.
