MAE 3910 – Fall 2022 Final Design Project Name: __________________________ MAE 3910 – Fall 2022 Design Project MAE 3910 – Fall 2022 Final Design Project You are to design a pressure release valve similar to the one shown in the figure below. The release pressure of the valve is controlled by a spring connected to a pressure plate pressing against a pressure chamber. When the internal pressure of the pressure vessel is greater than the pressure applied by the spring, the spring will contract, releasing the internal pressure. A power screw is attached to the other side of the spring to control the release pressure. When the screw is rotated (raised) via a handle, the spring is compressed further, and the release pressure increases. You are to design the pressure vessel, the fasteners to connect the pressure vessel to the release valve, the release valve spring, and the release valve handle/screw. The pressure inside the pressure chamber will fluctuate between 0 MPa and 10 MPa with a frequency of 5 Hz. Your design shall allow for the release of pressure to be set within this range. Further design constraints include: 1. The minimum diameter of the pressure vessel is 100 mm. 2. The fasteners will be threaded from the pressure vessel into the release valve body. No nuts will be used in this design. 3. The spring is to be designed for infinite life. 4. The power screw must be self- locking. 5. The maximum force applied by the user on the handle is 150 N. 6. The pressure vessel will be constructed from Aluminum 7. The fasteners and power screw design must meet ANSI standards for diameter, and pitch. You are free to select the steel grade from available standards. MAE 3910 – Fall 2022 Final Design Project 8. Spring material may be chosen from the ASTM certified spring materials. Wire sizes are to be chosen from Table A-28 in the textbook under either the Steel Wire or Music Wire columns For this project, you are expected to turn in a final report that provides a brief description of the design of the pressure valve. Please include the stresses you considered for each design element and what equations you used to quantify those stresses as well as a brief discussion of your design process, including design iterations you made along the way. I expect you to make design choices toward minimizing the total cost of the pressure release valve. Therefore, where possible, your design should aim for a factor of safety near 2. If you are unable to achieve this factor of safety, please discuss why in your design report. The following pages include a ‘Final Design Parameter’ table. Please fill out this table and include it in your final design report. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of all the variable you might need throughout your design process.
