1. Overview
The topic includes three lessons on work, income and ways of earning for retired people. The teaching pedagogy has been designed according to Australian Curriculum which has three features – knowledge and understanding, skills and rationale for each topic. After going through the lessons, the students would be able to develop subject knowledge, learn in collabo
rative environment with the help of assessments, ICT and student-teacher interactions. Various strategies have been utilized in the teaching methodology to ensure that students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds are addressed and their needs are taken care of. This includes the following strategies:
Brainstorming
This helps students discuss and understand each other’s ideas and come up with unique ideas as well
Metacognition
In this strategy, students are expected to write about their understanding of a term/concept. It is followed by a discussion and explanation by the teacher about the actual concept.
Smart student application for conducting quiz
Applications like Kahoot, Padlet and Socrates are used to conduct quizzes effectively.
ICT based learning
Teachers utilize projector and laptops for audio/video projection so as to enable visual learning. ICT is beneficial, especially for those who are good visual learners and need to revisit concepts at a place and time of their choice.

Students have individual characteristics and unique learning requirements. Some are quick to grasp concepts while others are late learners. In order to cater to each type of student, the teachers need to devise a teaching methodology which responds to each student’s needs. They need to create an effective learning environment, make students actively think, listen and participate. Regular assessment of each student’s success/failure is critical for improved learning outcomes. ICT comes in handy in some situations where visual learners benefit the most. Regular revision with the help of quizzes also helps in grasping the subject knowledge and gain deeper insights into the subject. Australian Curriculum is designed keeping the above mentioned requirements of students in mind.
The three lessons presented here aim to help the students understand different types of work, to analyse different sources of income and to develop understanding of how retired people can earn. Each lesson starts with the teacher creating an effective classroom learning environment and defining the rules and expectations. The teacher would make the students write the lesson outcome in their notebooks and read it aloud. This is to ensure that the students are able to recall the lesson when required. This is followed by a brainstorming activity where the students are divided into groups and each group is given a term. Students are expected to discuss and write about their understanding of the term. The leader of the group would explain the same to the class and the teacher would then explain the terms to the students with the help of examples. The brainstorming activity helps in collaborative learning and critical thinking. Students would also develop leadership and listening skills. In the last phase, teacher asks the students a set of questions to help the students apply the knowledge gained and develop speaking skills. The teacher utilizes audio and video to explain the concepts to the students. Next sessions are followed up with a Kahoot/Padlet/Socrative quiz on the lesson learnt.
