As we have discussed so far this semester, intelligence work is fraught with difficulty. We have examined many of the ways in which this work is difficult in general terms, as well as the difficulty between the intelligence community and the policy world. For this project, you will apply this knowledge to a specific case through afilm analysis. Please choose one of the following films:

Top Tier

Zero Dark Thirty
The Imitation Game
The Falcon and the Snowman

Operations

Argo
The Man Who Never Was The Catcher Was A Spy Charlie Wilson’s War

Counterintelligence

Breach

Policy

13 Days
The Gathering Storm

If you wish, you can propose a different movie to analyze—just run it past me first, along with the merits for doing so.

Then, write a paper of approximately 2000 words (+/- 10%). In the paper, you should identify at least five of the key intelligence activities depicted in the film. Why are they important? How do you know? One of the learning objectives in the course is to make connections between what we have done in class and what is happening in the “real” world. How is the film in conversation with our readings and class discussions? Finally, how does the film depict the intelligence mission? To the extent possible, you should also discuss some of the ways in which the movie differs from real events and what we can learn from these differences. Intelligence-wise, what are some lessons we can learn? The paper should have one-inch margins, using a normal font and font size, such as Times New Roman 12, with appropriate citations.

Introduction
The Imitation Game is a historical thriller film directed by Morten Tyldum, and the film was released in 2014. Benedict Cumberbatch portrayed the character of a Camb
ridge mathematician and crypto-analyst Alan Turing. The film depicts the creation of a machine by Turing that helped the allied powers to win the Second World War. The British intelligence agency MI6 was newly formed in 1939 and recruited Alan Turing to decipher Enigma coded messages. During the Second World War, the Nazi army communicated through code language. Alan Turing and his team analysed the coded messages. Turing built a machine named Christopher that used logical algorithms and theories of computer science to decipher the coded messages. The film is a historical drama representing “The Theory of Everything”. It is a scientific biopic focusing on the scientists who have faced tragedies in life rather than contented lives.
Key Intelligence Activities
The film shows various intelligence activities carried out by the MI6 intelligence agent as well as the characters in the film. The major intelligence activities are experienced in the second half of the film. It sounds astonishing about Nazis combining intelligence and technology in the Second World War. The communication over an electro-mechanical device named Enigma was being used by the Nazis. The manufacturer guaranteed that it was impossible to decrypt the messages sent from the device.
The starting scene that shows the interview of Alan Turing, reveals the level of secrecy the British military maintained while recruiting persons. They had made it compulsory for the individuals to know the German language and they did not mention the job role earlier. Alan Turing did not know German but he figured out that the recruitment was for decoding Enigma. The team created for cracking Enigma included mathematicians, puzzle solvers, chess players and many more (CIA 2020). The project of cracking Enigma was a highly secretive job as the MI6 executives and few government officials knew about it. Most of the government officials and military officers believed that a British spy is communicating with MI6. This was a fictional story made up by MI6. The locals as military persons were unaware of the work being done at Bletchley Park.
The major intelligence activity was observed when Alan Turing and his team decoded the Enigma message for the first time. The decoded message displayed the co-ordinates of the German U2 ships that were about to blow up a British convoy. Alan did not share the information with any military official. As he anticipated that if the British army knows about the message they will launch an attack on Germany. Hence Germany will change their pattern of coding, making it difficult to decode (The Guardian 2014). The breaking of Lorenz cipher code known as the “Tunny” was another ultra intelligent activity in the film. The decryption of the German messages for the British Government is another major intelligence activity in the film.
Thus, Alan explains the consequences to his team and they keep it a secret just informing Menzies about it (Collins et al., 2017). Stewart Menzies spearheaded the MI6 strategies from the beginning. When Alan finds the Russian copy of the Bible on john Cairncross's desk, john blackmails Alan. John knew that Alan was a gay. During those days homosexuality was a crime. Menzies knew from the beginning that John was a Soviet agent and he has been sending British intelligence information to the soviets. At the end of the film Menzies forces the decryption team to burn all the information and advice them to forget about any sort of project that they worked on. He also mentions that he never wishes to see anyone again and none of them should be in contact with each other.
Importance of Intelligence Activities
For any intelligence service agency, keeping secrets is one of the major characteristics of national security. Intelligence service agencies work with highly sensitive information and any leakage of information could jeopardize the important missions. Messages were coded while communication has benefits and is implicitly depicted in the film. If the messages were not coded the British...
