Tourism generates foreign exchange, drives regional development, directly supports numerous types of jobs and businesses and underpins many local communities.



ASSESSMENT TASK:

    Tourism performs an important role in Australia’s economy that contributes to both employment and GDP. This paper will analyse the depth of tourism contribution in Australia including present challenges of the accommodations, food and beverage and travel sectors post pandemic and what are the solutions should be implemented to overcome such scenarios in the tourism industry in Australia.
Contribution of Tourism Industry to the Economy of Australia
    Australia’s tourism performance is examined by the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) through an economic lens. This abstract of the TSA view the impacts of Covid-19 on the performance and shows were it was deeply felt. Tourism industry in in Australia has experienced constant development from 2009 to 2019, therefore held a positive viewpoint by TSAs. There is a glaring divergence in the present situation.
    The impacts of Coronavirus on the visitor economy are unparalleled. Abrupt and critical disturbances to the tourism industry have caused impulsive limitations to mobility. These disturbances include –
· Significant reduction in international arrivals due to shutting down of international flights.
· Domestic tourism markets (both interstate and intrastate) have been significantly impacted due to closure of state borders and restrictions on internal mobility.
· Due to the amplified requirement for safety and physical distancing, people have become more cautious and afraid to travel (Tourism Research Australia, 2020).
    There was a decrease of 19.3% (or $29.5 billion) to $123.1 billion in 2019-20 in the result of tourism consumption in Australia. There was a reduction of 21% from $39.6 billion to $31.2 billion in international visitors. Decrease in domestic overnight travels of Australian by 20.1% from $87.2 billion to $69.7 billion. And finally, there was also reduction of 14.2% from $25.8 billion to $22.2 billion in Australians a day trip travel. Considering the present situation and its effects for longer term, returning of international travels to previous years is in question for many years, therefore, domestic tourism will be playing an important part in the Australian visitor economy and serious for longer term retrieval. Across Australia’s visitor economy, the drop in tourism consumption had diverse impacts on expenditure. There were most products that was considerably affected but the acute impacts were on transport (down 25.2%), information centre services and travel agencies (down 21%), accommodation and food services (down 18%) and recreation, cultural and gambling (19.3%). Expenditure on education has witnessed modest decline of down 7.5% from $8.7 billion to $8.0 billion as most international students have remained in Australia during the pandemic (Tourism Research Australia, 2020).
    One of the major contributors to GDP of Australia is the tourism industry, but GDP from tourism was $50.4 billion from the year 2019 to 2020, there was a drop of 17.6% in comparison from the year 2018 to 2019. The drop in GDP was very unpleasant compared to the rest of the economy. Tourism’s share of the national economy dropped from 3.1% in 2018–19 to 2.5% in 2019–20, this was a result of national GDP growth by 1.7% in 2019-20.
    In terms of exports and imports in Australia, expenditures of international visitors on Australian goods and services add on to the export value of tourism whereas expenditure of Australian inhabitants during overseas travel results in import value of tourism.
