In doing so, students are referred to consult the IBISWorld database through Torrens Library to do the preliminary research to specify an industry and an organisation wtihin the given industry that they intend to write their assignments. 1. Executive Summary
This analysis aims to understand the environmental implications, both internal and external, on a company and its performance. Qantas Airlines has been one of the top performing domestic and international airlines for a long time, in Australia and
here we try to understand the competitive nature of the airlines industry in Australia. To understand the environment and its effect on the airlines, tools such as PESTLE and SWOT have been used and strategies for the growth of the company have been suggested. Detailed study of the industry and the company helped us to analyze the current environment and suggest solutions for a better performance.
2. Introduction
Qantas, being in the aviation industry for the second longest time, is one of the most experienced airlines in the world (Qantas Data Book, 2018). Being one of the most diverse in the industry as well, Qantas runs both short, long and longest routes across the globe. In recent times, the most notable point about this airline is their record turnaround from losses of $2.8 billion to huge profits of $921 million from 2014-2016 (Sheedy, 2016). Qantas currently offers 2 brands to its customers, the premium Qantas brand and the low-cost Jetstar brand, both of which are performing very well in the present scenario. Qantas was founded in 1920, in Queensland (qantas.com, about us), it is also the largest running domestic and international airlines of Australia. Qantas and Jetstar current domestic market shares are 39% and 21% respectively (Qantas Data Book, 2018). Their international market shares are 17% and 9% respectively.
During the course of this analysis, we will identify the various environmental factors affecting the performance of the company. In the case of Qantas, this is very significant, as we will see later on, as their turnaround from their losses during the years 2014-16 was mostly due to external environmental changes, apart from internal decisions. Qantas knew how to utilize those environmental changes to their benefit and thus succeeded in their performance.
Mostly for environmental analysis, there are 2 kinds of analyses which can be done- external and internal. The most common tools used for these kinds of analyses are PESTLE, SWOT and Porter’s 5 forces. In this essay, we have conducted both internal and external analyses and used PESTLE and SWOT/TWOS tools for the same. The method of research was mostly secondary research, conducted on the performance of the company by the company itself, or other third parties.
3. Analysis of External Environment (PESTLE)
PESTLE/PEST (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental) is a model or tools used to assess these certain external factors, as mentioned above and how they affect the functioning and strategies of a company (Gupta, 2013, p. 36). Since aviation is a restricted industry, these factors have increased influence on each and every airline and that is what we are going to study below. In the course of the study, we will first put forward the points affecting Qantas in each factor, and then we will summarize the effects together.
Political- Aviation in Australia is very politically controlled, and time and again this has been a boon and a bane for Qantas. During its turbulent situation in 2014, their debt guarantee from the government was eventually refused. Also, time and again Qantas has been claiming that they are running below potential and the government is not helping (CAPA, 2015)
Economic- the main reason behind the huge loss occurrence of Qantas till 2014 was because of the staggering economy and reduced tourism. Also, in order to open up the economy, the government has liberalized certain aspects of international aviation companies, which reduces the scope of domestic companies
Social- the social factors are in favor of Qantas, as it has been a long-standing company in Australia, and represent the Australian culture and stature with its iconic “flying kangaroo”. Qantas runs one of the highest revenue routes in the world, the Melbourne-Sydney route and it is currently the second on their list with 65 flights a day (Platt, 2018, traveler.com)
Technological- Since technological advancements are happening everyday for the aviation industry, the company will always have to be at par to keep succeeding. Technologies like satellite-based internet and geared engines have already replaced traditional methods and long-route flights need to improve their services to be the most sought after (Business insider, 2017).
Legal- in legal, one of the most important steps taken by the Government was to repeal the carbon taxes, which actually helped Qantas return to profitability. Apart from this, Qantas has been accused by the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) for having anti-competitive behavior, not being transparent in...
