Introduction
Increasing pace of tourism industry is asking for the analysis of the various location to identify challenges in making a place a better tourist attraction. Punjab is the sixteenth biggest territory of India as far as zone and fifteenth as now as the populace. A city called Amritsar attracts the maximum number of tourists for the state each year and reasons are many. Located in the North-Western part of India, it boasts the presence of the holiest place of Sikh religion that is the Harmandir Sahib or famously known as the Golden Temple. The site is attracting tourists and what to improve on the policies by identifying the issues those cause hurdles in achieving the desired number of tourists in the location (kaur, 2016). The given solution will provide the information related to the tourism in Amritsar and also suggest the policies of tourism development after identifying the issues.
Analysing Amritsar as a Tourist Location
The data collected from the Punjab tourism website shows that in the year 2017 the total number of tourists those visited Punjab was 4,14,01,987 and Amritsar was visited by 2,59,78,495. In just eight years the number has increased ten times from what it was in the year 2009 (22,58,402) which shows Amritsar as a desirable tourist's destination for tourists. Not only the locals but some foreign tourists are also coming to Amritsar to enjoy the serenity the city has to offer to the visitors (Punjabtourism.gov.in, 2018). The city topped the list of new smart cities in the year 2016 as published by Urban Development Ministry. Identifying the development challenges, the city has focused on the development of self-sustainable civic infrastructure, e-governance, and public infrastructure which has improved the city as compared to the other 26 cities in the competition. To bring the tourists in the city, the Punjab Tourism has developed a website "Punjab Tourism" website that provides all the required information to the tourists related to accommodations, public transport, places to see, etc. in more than 100 languages even including languages like Zulu and Tagalog. As per the tourism department of Punjab, approximately 1 lakh tourists visit the city every day and about half stays. The average number of people attending the Golden Temple is 70 to 80 thousand which reaches 1.5 lakh on the weekends. The tourism industry provides the job opportunities to many people like approximately one tourist gives 2.5 people a job when visiting the city. All these add up to the economic development of the population which increase the GDP of the region helping in attaining the financial stability in the location. Analysing Amritsar as a tourist destination shows some positive results. But, it is labelled as the place with a religious value which limits the customer segment to be targeted to increase the number of tourists in the region. There is a high need for showing the other important attractions those Amritsar could offer to the tourists apart from just being a religious place of Punjab (kaur, 2016).
