Assignment 2: Film Encyclopedia Assignment (LO2) (LO3) (LO4) - Part 1

Summary:

Summary:

The Film Encyclopedia Assignment is a 10-slide PowerPoint presentation. Each slide will be an in-depth exposition of a term, influential film, technological innovation, or personality from film studies, filmmaking, or film history. The slides do not need to include audio narration but should include a good balance of text, still images, graphics, diagrams, embedded video clips, sound clips, or any other media that is relevant to the topic. If a slide examines a piece of film terminology, look at its meaning, use, history, application in film analysis or filmmaking, etc. If you are looking at a film personality--for example, an influential producer or actor--you may include some biography but focus on the person's contribution to the craft of filmmaking or the history of cinema. DO NOT include slides about the filmmaker used in your Auteur Analysis assignment.
Other guidelines:

  1. The topics should be presented in alphabetical order.

  2. Pay careful attention to the design of the presentation. It should have a consistent style throughout.

  3. The first page is a title page with a strong element of visual design, your name, the name of the course and instructor, and the date you submit the project.

  4. The final slide(s) should be a list of all references used in the production of the encyclopedia in APA format.

  5. Do not include a table of contents.

  6. The title and references pages do not count toward the 10-slide requirement.

  7. Use a mix of carefully selected media and original writing to define and illuminate each film term. Go beyond definitions to give your audience a well-rounded understanding of the topic.

  8. This project will be checked with Turnitin software. Use APA style in-text and parenthetical citations on every slide to show me where the information came from.

Scenes can and are sometimes meant to convey great meaning to the audience. (MovieClips, 2011) (Chan, 2015) Two examples of this would be the Tears in the Rain scene from Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and the I am Your Father scene from George Lucas’ Empire Strikes Back. These scenes are iconic film scenes that lead the audience to feel powerful emotions of hopelessness and fear. S. Stull Set Design Set design is used to make a film more aesthetic, communicating the themes, symbols, period, and setting. Sets are an integral part of a show's visual aesthetic and must interact with other design elements, such as costume design and lighting design. The set design plays an important role in supporting the production's style.  Symbols and themes can also be communicated through set design. Dark clouds and dead plants set an ominous tone in a deserted town, for instance. Lush trees on both sides of a path, allow the bright sunlight to set a serene and positive mood (Kumar, 2022). S. Stull (Behind Designs, 2020) Establishing Shot Establishing shot is a technique used by filmmakers to create context for the scene and make it feel like more than just a movie set. Establishing shots are often make use of the birds eye view camera angle. The first known use of an establishing shot was in 1915 in a movie called Birth of a Nation by D. W. Griffith (Matt, 2022 June). This scene from Sicaro makes great use of establishing shots (Maio). Loeffler T. (YouTube. 2017) Screenplay A screenplay is the script of the movie, it also includes instructions for actors. It has a standard format that is always followed. The formatting for a screenplay is extremely crucial because it determines the movies budget and schedule.  The first screenplay was used in George Melies' 1902 film A Trip to the Moon (Team).
