A group of children is playing soccer on a grassy field close to a service road. The service road has residents’ cars parked on each side. One of the children runs after a badly kicked soccer ball, which skips between two cars and onto the roadway. The child darts out just as a car approaches. The driver slams on his brakes, hits the horn, and hollers loudly. The child momentarily stops and then, with a burst of speed, races safely across the road to the other side. The driver is badly shaken by the incident. • Sketch a diagram of the brain and label at least four structures. (4 marks) • On your diagram, clearly indicate and name the two regions of the brain where the sounds from the horn and the sight of the approaching car would be interpreted by the child’s brain. (2 marks) Unit 1 Assignment • Outline the structures of the ear that the sound vibrations from the blaring horn would travel through, and describe how a nerve impulse would be initiated by the structures of the child’s ear. (2 marks) • Identify the hormone and the endocrine gland it was secreted from that helped produce the short term reactions of the driver. (1 mark) • Describe several physiological responses stimulated by this hormone that would be evident in the driver immediately after the incident. (3 marks) • Explain the inter-relations of the nervous and endocrine systems in helping the driver respond to the incident by drawing a feedback loop that shows the regulation of the hormone responsible for long term stress management. (2 marks) • Identify two possible technologies that would enhance the driver’s awareness of the child. Explain how these technologies would assist the driver in coping with the stressful situation. (2 marks) • Identify two possible technologies that could be implemented to increase safety in the playground area.
