In-Text Citation #1  Start Assignment Purpose Since incorporating quoted material into your papers requires you to follow a number of conventions, it is a good idea to get some isolated practice at this important writing element. The purpose of this assignment is to give you practice in the different ways direct quotes can be used in your sentences.  What are in-text citations? In-text citations are the parenthetical information provided at the end of a sentence with a direct quote. They tell the reader where the quoted material can be found within the source.  For example: He understands how many parents might be hesitant about using spyware, but he cautions "surrendering parental responsibility to a machine that allows the entire world access to your home borders on negligence" (Coben para 6). Basic rules of in-text citation usage: You need three pieces of information when you provide a direct quote from an author: Author's name and information Direct quote Page number/paragraph number. Example: He understands how many parents might be hesitant about using spyware, but he cautions "surrendering parental responsibility to a machine that allows the entire world access to your home borders on negligence" (Coben para 6). OR Coben understands how many parents might be hesitant about using spyware, but he cautions "surrendering parental responsibility to a machine that allows the entire world access to your home borders on negligence" (para 6). When do you use page numbers and when do you use paragraph numbers? Page numbers: Use page numbers when you have physical copies of the text or documents that have actual page numbers: journals, newsletters, books, etc. Your in-text citation will look like this: (123) Paragraph numbers Use paragraph numbers when you are using online sources (websites, online newspapers, anything with page numbers)  Your in-text citations will look like this: (para 11) Directions: STEP ONE: Read the article “Evolution’s Sweet Tooth” by Daniel E. Lieberman (Links to an external site.) https://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/06/opinion/evolutions-sweet-tooth.html on page 522 from Current Issues and Enduring Questions (our class text). STEP TWO: Write five independent sentences that model each of the five different ways of using direct quotes and in-text citations shown below. Pull direct quotes from Lieberman's article to use in your sentences for this exercise.  1. Introduce the author before providing a quote (add the page number of the quote at the end of the sentence):           Example: Eric Pierceson states that “most bullies are children who were in a position where they were once victimized by another child or adult” (para 2). 2. Introduce the author and provide a little background information on him or her before you provide the quote: Example: Eric Pierceson, who has done extensive research on child psychology and the effects of bullying on young children, states that “all teenagers that come from single-parent families are more at risk of being bullied when they enter grade school” (para 5). 3. Provide a context before introducing the quote (put the author's last name in the in-text citation): Example: It can be easy to detect bullies on school campuses because “they tend to stand out in a crowd due to their loud and aggressive personalities” (Pierceson para 12). 4. Add two quotes to the sentence and provide a context for the quote (this means that you make a connection between the source and your own words): Example: Childhood bullying is most harmful “when children do not get the counseling they need as the bullying takes place” and they develop deep-rooted psychological habits “as a result of protective defenses they create in their mind” to protect themselves from the trauma they have experienced as a result of the bullying (Pierceson para 8-9). 5. Introduce the quote with a complete sentence and a colon: Example: Pierceson remembers the time that he was bullied as a teenager on the basketball court: “I remember standing there hoping that a teacher would come by and see that I was in need of some help, but nobody came and I had to face them alone” (para 3). STEP THREE: Number each of your sentences.  Tips: · The author's name needs to go in the sentence OR in the in-text citation. · Never place a period or a comma before the end quotes.  INCORRECT- when they enter grade school." (211) CORRECT- when they enter grade school" (211). Daniel Libermann affirms that obesity is not something that people have to deal on external grounds. It is the procedure, which emerges from biological problems “The obesity epidemic has many dimensions, but at heart it’s a biological problem.” (Para Two)
Exercise Two
Libermann is one of the famous authors and activists who work on the social issues and tend to analyze the issues in the light of available facts. Libermann supports the recent ban on behalf of New York Mayor to control the sugar consumption in soft drinks. He relates the ongoing problem of obesity with more of a biological kind than the social one. “Lessons from evolutionary biology support the mayor’s plan: when it comes to limiting sugar in our food, some kinds of coercive action are not only necessary but also consistent with how we used to live.” (Para Two)
