Instructions Refer to the resources on the Directions for Essay Assignments to ensure you are meeting the requirements for the essay. In an essay of at least 850 words, please respond to the following: The time beginning with the Renaissance contributed much to the era of Modernity. Focusing on two of the eras in the second half of the course, explain the ways these earlier eras helped shape Modernity, using art/architecture/literature to illustrate. To answer this question, you’ll need to: 1. Explain the ideas and historical realities that characterized Modernity, pointing to evidence from the primary source documents and art/architecture. 2. Identify ideas and/or historical realities from two previous eras that persisted into Modernity. 3. Point to evidence from the primary sources and art/architecture for each of those two eras. 4. Analyze the impact on Modernity of these previous era’s writing and art/architecture How to Write Course Essay Submissions Directions: 1. Make sure you identify all parts of the question. Making an outline is an excellent tactic for this part. THE number one mistake students make is ignoring part of the question. 2. Point to specifics from the literature, architecture, artwork, or historical record that support your assertions. (This means that you should name and describe specific works of art, architecture, or literature...depending on what the question asks for. You also need to establish the context in which those works were created by addressing the historical record.) It's important to ensure that these specifics are not random, but rather clearly connected to your assertions. 3. Include analysis. (This means explaining the connections between the specific details you have provided--those regarding the literature/art/architecture/historical record--and the ideas you expressed in your thesis statement) 4. Your answers to the essay questions should be approximately 850 words. You MUST: · Submit original work. Any evidence of plagiarism will disqualify your work and trigger the course policies regarding academic integrity. · Use complete sentences and separate your answer into logical paragraphs. · Use course materials to answer the question. This means that ALL of your information and examples MUST come from the course materials. Outside sources are not allowed. The learning activities (including the OER and primary source documents) and online lessons provide all of the information you need, and have, in fact, been carefully chosen to assist you with accurate information. · Refer to artists/architects/authors/historical figures by their LAST names, not their first names. · Submit your work directly into the assignment drop box · Keep your work in third person. Keeping your work in third person is worth approximately 5% of your overall essay grade. This last is probably going to annoy you, at least at first; but it is important. All too often, students use statements such as "In my opinion," or "I believe." First of all, your reader can assume that this is your opinion or your belief, as it is your written work. Secondly, statements such as these undermine the authority of your work. "In my opinion" suggests that others' opinions might disagree with yours and implies a lack of confidence in what you're writing. State your ideas with authority. Finally, formal writing is in third person. Period. The more practice you have with formal writing, the easier it will become. Ok, but how do you put a posting in third person? Avoid all use of the word "I" (and its other forms, such as "my"). Statements that use "I" are first-person. Avoid the use of "you" (and its various forms). Statements that use "you" are second person. Hopefully, the following example will be of use. Not in third person: "When I read Hamlet, I could tell that the main character was tense." In third person: "In reading Hamlet, it is easy to see that the main character is tense." You MAY NOT: Use direct quotations or paraphrasing from any secondary source material in the text, online lessons, or any other sources. (The only material that may be quoted is that from the primary source documents linked in the Learning Activities. Quotations from other sources will not contribute to your score.) Use any quotations without quotation marks indicating those quotations as such. Present others' words as your own. Submit any materials generated by Artificial Intelligence
