Definition: Behavioral state machines model the state changes through which complex objects pass. Behavioral state machine diagrams are created for object and are like interaction diagrams. Elements of a behavioral state machine are state (shown as a rectangle with rounded corners), an initial state (shown as a small filled-in circle), a final state (shown as a circle surrounding a small filled-in circle like bull’s eye), an event (used to label a transition), a transition (shown as a solid arrow from one state to another and labeled by the event name) and a frame (indicates the context of the behavioral state machines).
Think about sending a first-class letter to an international pen pal. Describe the process that the letter goes through to get from your initial creation of the letter to being read by your friend, from the letter’s perspective. Draw a behavioral state machine that depicts the states that the letter moves through.
