Section 1:
Nursing Advocacy
Nursing advocacy is a process of acting for or on the behalf of someone who is unable to so for themselves. As suggested by Kalaitzidis and Jewell (2020, 79), nurses should always act in patient’s best interest and should not presume to be the advocates of the patient. Nursing advocacy is directly related to the patient care where with the patient’s wish and desire, nurses serve their role and start their treatment procedures with the help of medication.
Advocacy is therefore an important aspect in current professional nursing care for both the patient as well as the nurse. As stated by Liz Stokes (2019, 4), as per ANA, advocacy is important in nursing as it might reduce the chances of errors and harms to the patients. In this regard, nurses can also speak on the behalf of their patient and collaborate with the healthcare teams if any problem arises.
In Australia, there are several places specially the indigenous section where woman is being tortured and leading a miserable domestic life every single day. They are being assaulted and thrashed by their men, who vomit their frustration and stresses on their woman. These women often are admitted in several hospitals due to severe in injuries or blood clot as were beaten up regularly by their men.
In this situation, they feel too afraid to speak up against their men and the Australian registered nurses here can play the role of advocacy by speaking up the matter and solving the issue. In this way, as affirmed by Reed, Fitzgerald and Bish (2018, 748), they can provide the patient a safe and secured environment. Through advocacy they can able to educate the patient about their medical care, guide them for the insurance related question, administrative and legal tasks and many more.
