Responding to ChangeThamuk 2 Assignment 3: Managing Change Naomie Thamuk PHI 201 Christine Barham February 19, 2021 Reaction to Change Everybody has their response to any change they face in their lives. I am a person who deals with anxiety so change tends to frighten me. Considering one of the most impactful changes of my life of moving to the United States for college, it was a very crucial decision concerning my future and I was stuck with several kinds of mixed feelings and emotions in my mind. I was happy at the idea of going to college especially when I thought I was going to France which is a seven hour flight from my home Congo, in the same time zone and I knew I could go home whenever I could because you hop on a flight at 10 am and you are there by 5 pm. Of course, I was extremely nervous too as I was going into a completely different world than the present one. When I was told by my father that I was now going to the USA it felt like my world was flipped upside down. I had to prepare myself to be ready for this new journey. I have always been a sheltered mommy's baby and moving here to join my two older sisters away from my mother and father is probably the dream for most teens, but it was extremely scary for me. When I first got here, I cried at least once a week asking them to bring me back it was to the point where I was losing so much weight it became unhealthy. I was so used to everyone doing everything for me that when my sisters would ask me to do the smallest things I would cry. Framing Change To understand the change, I had to open myself to what going to college in the USA would add to my life. I grew up away from my older sisters and older brothers because they went to school in south Africa while my younger brother and I stayed in Congo with our parents because we were too young. I stayed with my two older sisters when I moved to the USA because they were here for college as well. After my first semester ended and I went home for Christmas which was extremely exciting because I was home and with my parents. I was only separated from my sisters for a week until they joined me back home in Congo, but I missed them so much. When we came back from the holidays I tried to open myself to the opportunities in front of me, I to think of my move to the USA as an opportunity to get to know my sisters that I only got to see on holidays and get closer to them because I envied how close they were to each other, I wanted to grow, become more responsible, I saw being here as an opportunity to meet new people, learn about other cultures, make wonderful memories with my sisters and new friends and that really helped cope with everything. Managing Change When I understood where my frustration and anxiety was coming from it made things better and clearer. I did not really have a problem with classes it was just first day nerves but when I looked around me and saw the same expression on almost every new student's face I did not feel as nervous because I was not alone. During my first week of college my mother came to school with me and waited on campus until I was done with classes. I understood that my frustration came from the idea of living with these two individuals who were kind of strangers to me because they left to go study in South Africa when I was 8 years old and I only saw them on holidays for a couple of weeks and the idea of living with them was scary because we did not always get along when we saw each other because I was not used to having older people other than my parents telling me what to do it was always my brother my parents and me. It seemed and felt like I was dumped away with these girls I love but do not like. The more time we spent with each other the more we grew to like one another and argued less. They understood that they had to be patient with me because of the sheltered and pampered upbringing that I had. They were forced to grow up because of leaving away. I became more willing to listen and learn. We created schedules for chores and with time they gave me more responsibilities I embraced it, it made me feel all grown up we got closer to one another. Living with my sisters made me discover that I love cooking, I even became the cook of the house. I would call my mom for recipes or watch videos. I gained insight into how something is always new for someone it is up to us how we shape it. This experience has helped become positive about change even though I deal with anxiety and self-motivated as I found that we are our biggest strength no one can help us until we decide to help ourselves. My desire to grow into a responsible person also helped me considerably. I become determined to find positivity’s in things and ignoring the negativities (Waterhouse & Mann, 2021).
