Cyber Security Threats in the Banking Sector
1. Introduction
1.1. Background
The banking sector ha
s been known to be one of the most profitable sectors when it comes to business. However, there are significant changes that can be made to the banking industry in order to prepare it for the new millennium. With the advent of the internet, it has become possible for money to be transferred online, and for payments to be made from one account to another through the internet. However, this has also increased the chances of theft or cyber security issues (Ruiz Winter & Amatte, 2017). Most banks constantly face cyber threats and have spent a great deal of resources in order to keep these threats at bay. However, there are still issues in dealing with the threats efficiently, and millions of dollars can be stolen through the use of the internet as well. The following review of Literature looks at some of the threats, and possible solutions to the threat as well.
1.2. Cyber Security Threats
There are significant Cyber Security threats to most banks. The first is that of Web Application Attacks. There are two types of access to the web, though a Port 80 (Http) or a Port 443 (Https). It has been known to be easy to hack into the websites, or hold it for hostage, which is why it could be a possible threat to the banking institution (Benjamin, Li, Holt & Chen, 2015).
The second possible threat would be the DDoS. This is also called the Distributed Denial of Service, and would turn away customers from the website of the company by making it extremely slow. These are often used in order to direct the customers to a rival organization, or to halt transactions for the bank, which could also lower the stock of the bank. This has also been known to have a significant effect on the bank’s security, and can cause harm.
1.3. Solutions to the Cyber threats
The two main solutions that have been proposed for the same would be to increase security. There are many security companies that are able to provide excellent security systems (Mbelli & Dwolatzky, 2016). There are also many organizations that specialize in cyber security and would be able to...
