Analysis of Minot’s “Lust”
Susan Minot’s “Lust” is a story about emotional complications, about devoid of a deep
feeling of everlasting relationships, and it is about the mundane
urge for having the carnal
knowledge. But though the author initially depicts in the story the physical needs of adolescent
girls and boys and their consequences, a thorough reading of the story can make a reader
understand that in most of the cases women urge to get into a sexual relation only to bridge those
emotional needs which are actually been denied to them by the conventions and cultural shape of
the society. Through the crude and confessional style Minot has presented the story of the central
protagonist’s life and such mode of narration has been able to leave a deep impression on the
minds of the readers and eventually it has succeeded to generate sympathy within the innermost
corners of the readers’ heart for the main character.
The basic concept that has been highlighted in the story is that, though women are too in
need of satisfying their sexual desires, their urge and their desires differ a lot from that of the
men. It is a raw reality that while women get into a sexual relation with a need for both physical
and emotional engagement, their counterparts, the men, seldom have the desire to incorporate
within the book of the carnal knowledge the elements of emotions and deep realizations.

sadness, an elusive gaping worry” (16). Interestingly enough, while describing the post-sexual
intercourse stage Minot shows how usually the men are left with a great experience of pleasure
and women are left with the same emotional void, for overcoming which, they usually get into a
physical relationship with men.
Besides, it should be admitted that Minot has been able to convey to her readers the harsh
realities of life (in respect of physical desires) through her scrupulous use of coarse words and
realistic descriptions, with a void of any kind of impressive or flowery language. The fleshy
descriptions of the experiences of the sexual encounters which the central protagonist had, add to
the realistic get up of the story to a great extent. For the central protagonist of the story, the
adolescent girl, every sexual encounter did pose a vague satisfaction as all such ventures...
