Abstract:
Formaldehyde is one of the most important industrial chemicals which have wide range of applications in products like alkali resins used in paints, adhesives etc., In common two type of catalysts are used one is Silver catalyst (gauge type) and Me
tal oxide, while comparing Metal oxide is mainly used as it yields 95-99 mol% conversion of raw feed Methanol to commercial grade Formaldehyde (37 wt% Formalin). The objective of this task is to design feasible operation for 5000 tonnes/year production of Formalin. (Fe/Mo metal oxide catalyst is used)
Introduction:
Formaldehyde occurs naturally in organic material by photochemical process, it is an important metabolic product in plants as well animals including humans. As it produces in low amount but in measurable quantity. In general Formaldehyde is having pungent odour, irritant to nose, eye and throat even it is of low concentration but it does not cause any chronic damage to human health.
Formaldehyde also forms in organic material if it is combusted incompletely best example is partially combusted wood material, since it is an important commodity at industrial scale which are used in many industrial as well in consumer products.
First synthesis of Formaldehyde was performed by ALEKSANDR BUTLEROV by hydrolysing methylene acetate in 1859 which finally gets confirmed by AUGUST HOFMANN in 1867 by producing Formaldehyde by passing Methanol vapours & air through heated platinum as catalyst (spiral form) since catalyst is of high cost in later years alternative catalyst developed one among them is metal oxides.
Only in 1882 production of Formaldehyde at industrial grade was achieved by TOLLENS by optimizing Air to Methanol Vapour ratio which is crucial in yield conversion. Platinum catalyst got replaced by Copper in the year of 1886 by LEOW process and Silver catalyst in 1910 a patented process by Hugo (German Company). More research in 19th century opened many options for industries one such is crystalline based catalyst in 1905 (Badische Anilin & Soda-Fabrik) & in 1925 developed high-pressure synthesized methanol. First Methanol was produced using timber with the help wood carbonization process. Schematic figure of process is shown below,

In early twentieth century production of formaldehyde started with growth rate of 11.7 % between 1958 – 1968 and it got boom in mid-1970s with 54% production capacity.
