In this essay, Kimmel has explained the common sociology of masculinity and how men tend to follow it un-consciously. Kimmel has exposed many beliefs in the society about how boys must behave from their childhood days till their adult life in his “Bros Before Hoes”. He has stated that boys are being raised abiding to certain codes like, ‘Guys don’t cry’, ‘Take it like a man’, ‘Size Matters’, ‘Be mad but don’t be sad’ etc. He has stated that if young boys do not grow up abiding to such principles, their masculinity will be questioned automatically. Guys are considered weak, or outcasted if they defer to the “code”. The sub-conscious so called the “Guy Code” is being passed down since generations. Yet there is no clear definition / explanation about Masculinity and how it is being used. Every man or woman has their responsibilities and they have their own criteria of fulfilling it, they often tend to improvise it to satisfy their gender motto. This is something that is being passed on from generations to generation. It is not only common in men, but it common for women too. Kimmel emphasized on men because they are more likely prone to such concepts that women. The “Guy Code” is never hard wired into us biologically, but is something that we have created sociologically to look tough in the society.
