CMAPP Model Paper + Presentation PAPER DUE: October 21, 2021, by 11:59 pm (submitted on Brightspace) WORD COUNT: 800-1000 words WORTH: 16% We have talked extensively about the CMAPP model and how beneficial it is for communication purposes. As you all progress in your studies and eventually in your careers, you will be working with a variety of people, and so knowing how to communicate and deliver information is a key skill to have. In this assignment you will choose 1 of the science articles from Science Daily- Engineering News + one other source of your choice related to your topic (make sure it is credible-see LEC 6). Using the CMAPP model create a scenario. I would like this paper to include all the components of a CMAPP model: Context, Audience, Message, Purpose, and Product in paragraph format. Using the content from the articles as the Message, think of who you are going to be informing, educating or relaying this information to, where it will take place, why you are even informing people about this message, how you will be delivering the message, etc. When you discuss the Product (how you will be relaying the message), I would like you to describe WHY you believe this is the best mode of delivery (based on the other components of CMAPP model). REMEMBER to think in context of your audience. Although I am allowing you to come up with your own scenario, make sure the elements work together and that you are not just choosing randomly. I also encourage you to use graphs and/or pictures to incorporate in your essay. A great place to get pictures is Pixabay. Most of these pictures do not need attribution (credit) and are under creative commons, Please make sure to use parenthetical citations and include a reference page of the article that you use in APA style. You also have the option to use other outside sources to supplement the information provided by the articles, but if you do make sure to reference them. https://www.sciencedaily.com/news/matter_energy/engineering/ https://www.sciencedaily.com/news/matter_energy/engineering/ Organization of paper: − Title page − Outline or Table of Contents − Short Introduction − A paragraph on each element of CMAPP model − A conclusion –which includes WHY your PRODUCT worked best with the elements of the CMAPP model − VISUALS incorporated throughout the paper − Reference page and in-text citations Example: (Yours will be longer and organized formally- this is just to understand the structure of the project) The article I chose was about how high the sugar content is in fruit flavoured yogurt. C: Takes place during health and fitness week at the nursing home; at 9 am; M: Sugar content is high in fruit flavoured yogurt. (Contents of the article) A: Senior citizens at Hillcrest Nursing Home P: To promote healthy eating amongst seniors and lower the risk of diabetes. Provide alternatives. P: A short PPT with a lot of pictures, large text, and bright colours. Also, samples of reduced sugar yogurts and a fruit platter. Reasoning: Because they are older, having a short presentation outlining the cons of high sugar count not lose their attention span. Also including pictures engages the audience and the limited amount of text is written in large font because it is easier on the eyes. Also, including actual samples of alternatives breakfasts to yogurt containing added sugar, helps with the transfer of knowledge. PRESENTATION When: Starts the week of November 3, 2021 (Submit to Brightspace Dropbox folder a day before your scheduled tutorial that week) Where: During your scheduled labs Duration: 5 mins Worth: 10% of total grade The presentation portion of this project will be taking place during the last 2 or 3 weeks of labs starting November 2021. You will be presenting and discussing the components of your paper using a Power Point or Prezi. It should be 5 minutes long (no longer, please!). You will be required to create a PowerPoint or Prezi and discuss the elements of the CMAPP (Context, Message, Audience, Purpose and Product), as well as the reasoning (why did you chose the product). Remember to use proper presentation set up as well as to practice presentation skills! (We will discuss these skills in lecture) Finally, you will be assessing your classmates as they present (I will be giving out a handout in tutorial). This will be a component of you grade, so please make sure that you show up even if you are not presenting. In terms of order of presentations, if you would like to go first, let me know, other than that they will be at random based on the order that they are uploaded in Dropbox. CMAPP MODEL CMAPP Paper-More details ORGANIZATION Title Page • APA format Outline or Table of Contents Section • An outline of what will be incorporated in the paper Short Introduction • Introduce what you’re going to talk about • Introduce the title of article and author Body • A paragraph for each element of the CMAPP • Use headers • Incorporate images that relate to the text (see CMAPP Model Assignment on Brightspace) Conclusion • Include why your product worked best for the elements of the CMAPP. Incorporate lessons learned in previous classes. This is where you include your reasoning and explanation. (You can also have a separate Reasoning section if you prefer that-before the conclusion section) • Wrap up the paper Reference Page (+ in-text citations) • APA Format FORMAT • Readable font, 11 or 12 pt. font; 800-1000 words • Double spaced • Page numbers in the upper right-hand corner, no page # on the title page • When incorporating images include a short description under the image and the source you got it from in brackets. I suggest you use Pixabay because most of the images are free for reuse with no attribution required, which will make your life easier and avoids copyright. • Use this formatting: Nuclear power plant (Pixabay) REMEMBER Include in-text citations and a reference page in APA format. Reference page should include article used, any other outside sources, and Pixabay or other royalty free image source. This is a communications course, so think of how you can best describe the elements of your scenario. Incorporate lessons we learned in class into the reasoning of your Product. Double check sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Use formal, concise, specific, and clear language. Boston, MA: Cengage Learning. This was taken directly from the Engineering Communications textbook: Ch.2, pg.20-21 Context • What is the underlying or surrounding situation? • What are the physical conditions (lighting, noise, etc...)? • How will the context affect how my audience responds to my message or to me? • What kind of relationship do I have with my audience? • What other relationships might have an impact? Message • What am I trying to communicate? • What are the main points? • What significant details should I include? • Is my message self-contained, or is it the beginning, middle, or final segment of a longer communication? • What sequence of information have I used to organize my message? • How technical should my message be? Audience • Specifically, whom am I trying to communicate with? • What does my primary audience already know? • What does that audience need and/or want to know? • Who might a secondary audience be? • What assumptions have I made about my audience(s)? • How much specialized training does my primary audience possess? • How will my primary audience benefit from my message? Purpose • Overall, am I trying to inform, persuade, instruct, or describe? • Why do I want to communicate? • Why do I want to communicate at this particular time? • Why would my audience need or want this message? • What do I want to achieve through this message? • Was my message explicitly requested and how might that be relevant? • What deadline are involved? How have I identified and dealt with them? Product • Should I be writing, phoning, visiting and so forth? • How is the product I’ve chosen appropriate for this context, audience, message, and purpose? • How do the wording and format of my product reflect the image I want to present?

Context
The surrounding situation of my speech about shape shifting materials is the 1st year class of civil engineering, where lessons about molds are being provided. The class is carried in a well-lit rooms, such that the shape shifting materials are clearly visible to the students. The context do affect the response of the audience towards my message because, when they are able to understand my message clearly, then their response also comes concrete and well-defined. I am a professor and hence a student-teacher relationship exist with my audience. Other relationships like familiarity with students might have greater impact as, they would prefer to listen to the lectures of those professors, with whom they are familiar, as they can ask questions feasibly, whenever they face understanding issues.
