Scott Fitzgerald Purpose In order to demonstrate your understanding of the chosen novel, you will complete a series of activities. Literature Circle Roles Discussion Leader- Develop a list of questions for each chapter that you think your group should discuss. Create thought provoking, literal, interpretive, and universal questions. You will be in charge of leading the discussion that day. Literature Circle Roles Diction Detective- Carefully examine the diction (word choice) in each chapter. Search for words, phrases, and passages that are especially descriptive, powerful, funny, thought-provoking, surprising, or even confusing. You will also be looking for literary devices, such as figurative language, author’s purpose, tone, mood, etc. Literature Circle Roles Bridge Builder- Build bridges (make connections: text to text, text to world, text to self) between the events of the book and other people, places, or events in school, the community, or your own life. Make predictions about what might happen based on what has already happened. Look for character’s internal and external conflicts and the way these conflicts influence their actions. Literature Circle Roles Reporter- Identify and report on the key points of the assigned chapters. Make list or write a summary that describes how the writer develops the setting, plot, and characters in each chapter of the book. Share your report at the beginning of the group meeting to help your group focus on the key ideas presented in the reading. Think of yourself as a newspaper reporter, you must be concise. Literature Circle Roles Artist- Create an illustration related to each chapter. It can be a sketch, cartoon, diagram, flow chart, or other depiction. You can choose to illustrate a scene, an idea, a symbol, or a character. Consider how to use color in illustration for effect. Write a reflection that explains your graphic, symbolic connections, or connections between images and literature. Show illustration to group without explanation. Ask them to respond with comment or questions then you can explain your illustration. (Think of what a Google map looks like when you are getting directions.) You must have at least seven labeled places/landmarks. It needs to be in color. It needs to be at least half a white poster board in size. It needs to have geographical features on it (forests, mountains, beaches … etc.) It needs to have the path of the journey clearly marked. Back Novel Novelties You are to create a REAL food item. (Yes! We should be able to eat it.) It must represent some part of the novel – a character, a symbol, an event, a theme …etc. You will write 150 – 200 words explaining how the cooked food relates to the novel. You CANNOT buy a pre-decorated food item. Back Dear Diary You are to take on the persona of one of the minor characters in the novel. You are to write one diary entry about a major event in the novel. You need to: make sure your diary entry is at least 150 words long. make sure that you write from the point-of-view or the character you have chosen. make sure that you don’t merely summarize the event. You need to give your take on it, make predictions, etc. make sure to sign the character’s name make sure to illustrate the journal entry Back Tattoo Design Some of the characters in the novel are looking to get a tattoo but are unsure of what to get. You are to help them out. Choose one character from the novel to help. You need to do the following for that character: identify the character design a tattoo. (You must create an image of it.) write 75 – 100 words explaining the significance of the tattoo (its meaning, the significance of the colors, etc.) Back Advertisement Imagine that the publishers of the novel have asked you to make a commercial to advertise the novel. You need to: Video the commercial Give hints about events in the novel without totally giving away the ending Remember to use some of the persuasive techniques that we discussed Back Book Cover and Bookmark You are to design a bookmark advertising the novel. You need to include the following information: Title and author Drawings/Pictures of Four symbolic objects in the novel A catch phrase Five-sentence blurb (summary) about the novel Other titles by the author You are to design a Book Cover for your novel. It cannot mimic or even look remotely close to the actual cover of the novel (British, American, or any translation.) Back Character Poem Your favorite character in the novel is probably the character you learned the most about. You know his/her feelings, likes and dislikes, dreams and disappointments … everything about his/her personality. For this activity, you will put yourself in your character’s shoes and write an “I AM” poem as if the character were writing it about himself or herself.
