Introduction Every substance abuse case is individual and as such requires a unique assessment and intervention plan to best help a client. Heroin is an illicit drug with hasty addiction and many side effects. Here, a case study of a woman, Candy, from the film Candy (Armfield & Fink, 2006) is examined in order to create an appropriate intervention plan based on alcohol and other drug [AOD] use theory, research and Candy’s assessment. Page 1/4 Comment [SLS1]: Here the writer introduces the ‘case’ – the character Candy from the film of the same name. Case Formulation and Assessment Candy’s treatment needs to be sensitive to her needs as a woman and client. Candy has built a tolerance to heroin and subsequently has withdrawal symptoms if not using, and is unable to cut down on her own. As such, she fulfils the substance dependence criteria (Stevens & Smith, 2013). Heroin is an opiate whose repeated use causes tolerance and addiction “enhanced by intravenous administration” (Stevens & Smith, 2013, p. 7). During this film, Candy appears to go through the prodomal, crucial and chronic phases of her substance use (Stevens & Smith, 2013), paralleling the film’s heaven, earth and hell sections. This journey from “controlled use to being controlled by the use is the nature of addiction” (Stevens & Smith, 2013, p. 128). This dependence despite consequences is a “result of linking learned associations between drug effects and environmental cues” (Stevens & Smith, 2013, p. 70) and thus is a behaviourally influenced phenomenon. “The majority of … cohabiting female substance abusing patients who enter treatment are involved with substance abusing partners”, as is Candy’s case (Winters et al., 2002, p. 352). Initially in therapy, the process of assessment and ethical considerations would be discussed, as well as building rapport with Candy. Assessment would be used to determine my fit with Candy, the relationship issues of the client, and Candy’s coping strategies and outside support resources. Later, assessment will be used again to evaluate progress and follow up with Candy’s outcomes. In order to determine if a behavioural approach to therapy is appropriate for Candy, a diagnostic interview would be used to discover her habits, family issues, readiness for change and the influences on her use with assistance from the DSM 5 (APA, 2013). I would also use an addiction survey index [ASI] to ensure I was receiving a comprehensive picture of Candy’s use, including any dual diagnosis required (Stevens & smith, 2013). Candy’s relationship situations seem to be a large influence on her use. To ensure that these same relationships don’t create a potential relapse, her parents and partner should be involved in therapy. Additionally, any mental health issues concerning Candy will need to be addressed because in many substance using women, depression is a factor (Stevens & Smith, 2013). Candy does appear to have a co- ACAP Student Learning Support. ACAP is a college of the Navitas Professional Institute Pty Ltd. National CRICOS Code: 01328A. RTO Code: 0500. Comment [SLS3]: Another example of linking the case to theory, with referencing. Comment [SLS4]: Here the writer is using first person ‘I’ when explaining what they would do as the counsellor in this situation. Once Candy’s addiction becomes full blown in the film, she is in a state of precontemplation (Stevens & Smith, 2013), meaning she has no real intention of undertaking any behaviour changes until later into the film. During her methadone maintenance program, Candy is in the action stage (Stevens & Smith,

Introduction
The substance that cases addiction in a person and makes the person helpless in absence of the substance is known as a drug. A drug makes the person incapable of handling himself/herself in case of its absence. Drugs are a major cause of deaths and drugs harm more than any other chemical. Many people try and undergo rehabilitation for drugs. We have many live examples of known men and worm who have come back to normal life after leading a life of drug addiction. Many people think that the drug addicts lack the willingness and the power to quit drugs at their willingness. Drugs is a strong disease and quitting drugs require more than strong willingness and good intentions. . (Kolodny, A., Courtwright, D. T., Hwang, C. S., Kreiner, P., Eadie, J. L., Clark, T. W., & Alexander, G. C. (2015). ) Addiction is a severe and uncontrollable disease in which the person gets a compulsive drive to take drugs and finds it difficult to control in spite of knowing the harmful consequences. The initial drug usage is voluntary but the next uses of the drugs which lead to addiction cause the brain to lose control over the urge of having drugs and leads to helplessness in case of absence of drugs. Every drug requires varying levels of understanding and medical treatment. The initialisation and the long term planning including the detox procedure is different for each drug. Heroin is one such drug in which the process is long and heavy. This report is a case of a woman named Candy from the movie Candy who has been identifies as a drug addict person and a new drug intervention and control plan has to be made for her which would be strictly specific to her cause and to her social and behavioural understandings. In the movie we understood that it is the Social and the Behavioural influences of Candy which are the major reasons for taking heroin. Based on these conditions a treatment plan has been devised to provide a strong and a comprehensive treatment plan to prevent relapse. The method is based on the empirically tested techniques and methodologies What do we know about heroin? Heroin is an opium based drug which is manufactured from morphine. Morphine is a natural substance that is taken from the seed pots of various plants which are opium poppy plants and are grown in the south east and south west regions of Asia, Colombia and Mexico. Heroin comes in 3 forms, it may be pure white, brown in colour or even a black sticky substance known as black tar heroin. There are multiple names of heroin and is is popularly known as horse, hell dust, big H and also smack. (Kolodny, A., Courtwright, D. T., Hwang, C. S., Kreiner, P., Eadie, J. L., Clark, T. W., & Alexander, G. C. (2015). )There are multiple ways of consumption of heroin too. Some people snort the drug while some people smoke it. Some people even mix the drug with crack cocaine and take it together. The process is called speedballing and brings a very high to the person consuming it. The effects are seen on the sensors feeling the happiness, the pain the heart rate beating etc. The consumption of the drug accelerates the receptors and the brain feels a gush of...
