Overview

This report reviews the case study of smart farming using big data. This involves the use of technologies like Cloud Computing and Internet of Things. Big data plays an important role in gathering, analysing and using the data for decision making. This report aims to identify the issues related to smart farming in the sequence of their priority. The issues are analysed through concepts and principles. The report discusses the insights that surface during analysis of the information while identifying the issues. Lastly, the report discusses the alternatives that the smart farming organizations should consider to resolve the issues along with the benefits and consequences of the alternatives. The recommendations proposed to be practiced as alternate solutions to the issues in smart farming, are made following the identification of resources, setting forth the time frame and monitoring the processes required in establishing alternative solutions.
Farming operations have been empowered with data which is generated and captured using smart machines and sensors on farms. Smart farming is trending through the use of Internet of Things along with Cloud computing. Smart farming facilitates on-location as well as remote management tasks on the captured data which provides a clear picture of the context and situation of events in real-time. The conventional tools like tractor, rain gauge, etc. are enhanced with sensors and built-in intelligence to offer autonomous context awareness. Smart farming involves human intervention only at the higher intelligence level with most of the operational activities performed by machines using the big data captured and analysed by them.

Prospective of ACS Code of Professional Conduct
Big data can be defined as the data sets that are so voluminous and complex that traditional data processing systems are insufficient to analyse them. It requires new technologies to uncover insights from the diverse data sets and transform the insights into value through new analytical techniques and technologies. The conceptual framework is depicted by the authors in [5] as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1: Conceptual Framework of Smart Farming using Big Data technology [5].
Data chain refers to stages of managing data from data capture, storage, transfer, transformation, analytics and data marketing. Farm management processes check that the process objective is met even when disturbances are observed. A controller is used to check system behaviour and correct the measurements to make them compliant with system objectives. Network management organization involves stakeholders and how they can help in achieving process objectives. Network management technology includes computer components, software, applications and standards that are required in managing farm data and farming processes [3]. Technological advancement is driven by global food security and nutritional value concerning health. Precision agriculture further leads to explicit information and facilitates decision making capabilities thus driving smart farming technically as well as economically.
Issues
The main issues researched through literature review involve governance issues, data quality issues, technical issues and power related issues. Governance issues include data protection law and intellectual property law [4]. Data cannot be protected in Data protection law as it includes personal data or data collected on objective circumstances of the identified person. The law is applicable for personal...
