Task 1 Research and report on alcohol and other drugs issues and responses for a target group. For this task you need to choose one (1) target group from the list below and answer the questions that follow about this group. Your answers for Task 1 should total approximately 1000 words. NB: You will need to do some research beyond the information provided in the learning materials to be able to answer the questions well, and an Internet search is a good start. Target Groups · People with a mental health disorder · Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples · Prisoners · Young people · People from non-English speaking backgrounds (you can choose a specific background if you wish) · Gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender/intersex (GLBTI) people (you can choose one of these groups if you wish) · People in rural or remote regions of Australia Answer the following four (4) questions. 1. How does society and/or the media generally view or portray this group? What are some of the stereotypes about this group? You need to provide examples to support your conclusions, i.e. a brief survey of people you know, or evidence from newspapers or TV programmes. 2. How might this group’s alcohol and other drugs use be influenced by social, cultural or environmental factors? 3. What are some of the important issues for this group with regard to their alcohol and other drugs use? You must research the National Drug Strategic Framework and analyse the impact on service delivery as well as consider:- the impact that alcohol and other drugs use has on the health of the target group; legal problems that arise; financial issues and the consequences for relationships, including family, work and friends. 4. What types of services or projects would be useful to minimise the harms of alcohol and other drugs use for members of this group? Briefly explain how they might be useful in minimising harms. Think about services or projects that focus on the alcohol and other drugs user in the context of their environment and social influences. Task 2 Read the case study below and answer the five (5) questions that follow. Case Study Kathy is a 29 year-old woman with a six-year history of heroin use. She has recently ended a four-year relationship with a man who uses heroin on a daily basis. He has been physically violent towards her on several occasions in the past. Kathy has just found out she is about nine weeks pregnant. She has been reducing her heroin use over the past six months. She states she would like to continue with the pregnancy but feels she cannot remain abstinent from heroin. She still wants to use and has not yet told her ex-boyfriend that she is pregnant. She also feels she cannot remain living in the flat that she had been renting with her ex- boyfriend as she cannot afford the rent on her own—she is already behind on the rent. Kathy wants your help but she is not sure what kind of help she needs. Her parents and siblings live in the same city but she thinks they don’t want anything to do with her. They have never approved of her relationships or how she lives her life. Answer the following five (5) questions. 1. Describe how this client is likely to present for her initial assessment. What do you think she might be feeling? 2. Considering your role as the worker, what would your aims be for this first session? 3. What skills and strategies would you use during this assessment with Kathy? 4. What other agencies or professionals would you consider might need to be involved in supporting Kathy? Explain your reasons for their involvement and why particular referrals would be given priority. 5. What duty of care issues relate to Kathy and her baby? Task 3 Answer the following two (2) questions. 1. It is important, as AOD workers, that we are aware of our own values, we develop our understanding of where these come from, and we are able to discern when it is appropriate or inappropriate to apply these in our work. Look at the following three statements: · Addictions can be managed but not cured · All drugs should be legalised · Heroin is worse than alcohol These statements represent some of the most contentious debates existing within the AOD sector. Select one (1) of the statements above and complete the following tasks: a) List three (3) arguments which agree with this statement and provide evidence to support this. b) List three (3) arguments which disagree with this statement and provide evidence to support this. For example, regarding the statement: “Alcoholism is a disease” a) Alcoholism is a disease because …. i) People can take medication to combat it. ii) It has a fairly standard and predictable progression, similar to other diseases. iii) It is a disorder of the brain affected by biology and genetics. b) Alcoholism is not a disease because …. i) Drinking is a choice. ii) Alcoholism is more a social, psychological or behavioural problem. iii) Alcoholism can be effectively resolved by willpower and/or harm reduction strategies, not necessarily abstinence. 2. Many people talk about having an “addictive personality”, yet professionals disagree with whether or not an “addictive personality” exists. Research on drug dependence indicates that there is some genetic influence in peoples’ addictive behaviours. Do some research into the concept of the “addictive personality”. What are your thoughts about the existence of an “addictive personality”? Write a paragraph describing your thoughts and include references to the sources of information you have used to form your opinion. Task 4 Read the case study below and answer the questions that follow. Case Study You are a support worker in a homeless service that values person-centred care and harm minimisation strategies. The service provides short-term accommodation (that is up to 2 weeks) and, in addition, provides direct case management services to people experiencing homelessness. Your primary job is to support people to locate stable and long-term accommodation. Casey is 17 years old and has lived on the streets for the past 12 months. She was thrown out of home when she told her parents that she was gay. Casey regularly uses marijuana, tobacco and alcohol, and occasionally smokes ‘crystal’ (methamphetamine). She has come into your service to seek assistance. Answer the following four (4) questions: 1. Explain what harm reduction strategies you would use with Casey. 2. Describe the category/categories of the drug/drugs Casey is using (e.g. depressant). 3. Describe how your values could influence your work with Casey. 4. Identify a service you could refer Casey to and write a referral for her (up to 300 words). 4 LA023933 Written Assignment 2, 900-80288V01, SoA in Mental Health & Alcohol and Other Drugs, CHCAOD001 Ed 10 © New South Wales Technical and Further Education Commission, 2019 (TAFE NSW), Archive version 1, January 2019
