Consumers are becoming more conscious about the environment. Therefore, they are becoming more inclined to buy sustainable food products. Consumers are interested in having organic foods rather than the foods, in which chemical fertilizer and pesticides are used. The preferences of the consumers towards organic foods are increasing not only because they are getting conscious about environment but also they are getting conscious about their health. Therefore, food industry is getting sustainable to create a good image among the consumers and protect the environment. Companies are paying heed attention on reducing the manufacturing of food products containing Trans fat and gluten (Franceschelli, Santoro & Candelo, 2018). They are using such methods to produce their items, which are less water consuming and free from gluten or Trans fat. They are producing products, in which pesticides are not used. They use organic elements to produce the food items. They are also using sustainable ways to distribute their food items in the market. For instance, they use trucks for delivering the products, in which biodiesel is used. The usage of biodiesel cause less carbon emission. Industries in this competitive world are trying to enhance their performance with a specific purpose in mind. In this assignment we will study about the strategies of PepsiCo of being sustainable in the market by producing sustainable food items and beverages.
Leadership Theories Guiding the Concept of Performance with Purpose
PepsiCo has a belief that there is an opportunity to change the whole food system. Therefore, they have taken the initiative to produce more sustainable food system. PepsiCo has planned to produce their food and beverages in such way that the nature will not be harmed for the production and also their customers will be provided with their preferred beverages and food with the same nutrition. PepsiCo may face risks regarding their supply chain management, operation management and finance to create a sustainable food system (PEPSICO, 2020). However, the sustainable food system will be beneficial for the company to achieve competitive advantages in the market and enhance their market share (Bartelmess and Godemann, 2019). Demands of sustainable products are increasing day by day in the market. The demand for sustainable products have enhanced by 50% over 30 years. PepsiCo has always supported sustainable food system. Therefore, they make agriculture as a foundation of their food products. They use more than 25 crops produced in 60 countries in their food products and beverages.
Under the leadership and guidance of Indra Nooyi PepsiCo has a strategy to make their products more sustainable, comprehensive and innovative in future. Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of PepsiCo follows transformational and transactional leadership styles to motivate the employees to come up with innovative and creative ideas to produce sustainable food products.
