Information Systems in Organisations 6348 Case Study Assignment – the Future of job Due Dates: Week 10 in tutorials - Progress presentation Week 12 in tutorials - Final Presentation Week 12 Friday 4th May 2018 by 11.00 pm – Report (online submission in Canvas) Weightings: The progress presentation + final presentation + case study report is worth 30%. Progress Presentation (5%) Final Presentation (5%) Report (20%) Introduction In this assignment, you will work in groups of 2 to 4 students. You are responsible for forming and managing your own group. Groups must be formed within your tutorial. Each group member is to actively and continuously participate in the group work. Some of the ways in which you can find group members are: talk to other students in your tutorial or post a message looking for group members on the unit Canvas coffee club chat. Task Your task is to analyse an employment category applying Information Systems in Organisations concepts. The assignment requires you to apply the skills and knowledge you are acquiring during this semester based on information systems in organisations topics. This can involve modelling the work/business processes, describing various scenarios of how information system might change the job in the future, stakeholder identification, discussing various information system issues, and presenting it all in a well organised professional management report. In this assignment, your group will analyse a job or role in an organisation to try to understand how it might evolve in the future. The assignment requires you to apply the skills and knowledge you are acquiring during this semester based on ISO topics. Some of these topics include: • e-business • business intelligence and decision making • supply chain management • business system modelling • Enterprise Computing (ERP, SCM, CRM) transformation • Information systems management • Cloud computing • IT security in an organisational context In addition to the disciplinary skills and knowledge mentioned above, the case study is expected to improve your skills in communication, problem solving, analysis and learning to work with a professional attitude independently and with others. Assignment There are three parts to this assignment: Part 1 - Group Presentation (5% marks) - week 10 tutorial Students will deliver a 5 minute progress presentation in class in week 10 tutorial based on work completed to-date. This presentation is mandatory and will attract a mark out of 5. It is important to show progress at this stage; otherwise extra measures will be put in place for successful completion. Groups may choose to nominate members to present in class. Part 2 - Final group presentation (5% marks) - week 12 tutorial As a group, you are required to present a Final summary of your report on the case study to the class. Each member of the group will be expected to contribute to the case study and be involved in the presentation. You may use PowerPoint slides if you wish but no more than 8 slides. Before beginning your presentation, please provide a handout listing the group members (student ID, surname, first name) and your presentation (this can be a printout of the PowerPoint handouts) to your tutor. Each Final presentation is expected to take around 10 minutes and no more than 15 minutes (a strict 15 minute limit applies for your presentation), including any questions from the tutor or other students. Be prepared for questions. Groups should present only important aspects of their analysis. Your tutor and peers will be evaluating the presentation based on the following points: 1. cohesion - how well the points in the presentation are brought together; 2. readability - how easy it is to read the materials/slides; 3. clarity - the clearness of your delivery style; 4. communication - how well you communicate with the audience; 5. content - the content of the presentation; 6. participation - the extent that everyone contributes, and 7. team work - how well you work together as a group. Part 2 - Management Report (20%) due by 8 May 2018 by 11.00 pm This assignment is primarily a management report (created by your group) addressing all questions, analysis, and findings based on the specified topics described below. The submission is to be done online (uploaded to the unit Canvas site) on or before 8 May 2018 by 11.00 pm. The report must be done in either New Times Roman font size 12 or Arial font size 11, single spacing. The report must be 10 pages or less [the page count excludes the coversheet, table of contents, assumptions, appendices, and references]. Your management report should be well laid out, complete, easy to follow, easy to read. Your report should be able to be presented to management as a proposal to improve the way in which people work in the organisation. The following is a structure that you might adopt for your report: • Cover sheet - filled in with all information including team members • Table of contents • Assumptions (optional - only if any are made) • Brief introduction - half page • Business models – easy to read and easy to understand • Discussion, solutions, and presentation of your analysis – thorough, easy to read and easy to understand • Summary of findings - half page • References - Harvard author-date style. Report Submission Instructions Before you submit your report, you must save it as an MS Word file, with a descriptive name that includes the unit number and the tutorial group. It is highly recommended that each group member keep a copy of the management report that was uploaded. Please note you are to upload only one (1) single MS Word file for each group. (It is recommended that you do not use rtf files as they tend to get very large and may take a long time to upload.) Submit your assignment as early as possible. The number of assignments being submitted across the University towards the deadline can be very large. This means there could be a large amount of data traffic to Canvas, causing slow to very slow uploading and response times. Therefore if you leave the uploading to the last minute, your assignment may not upload in time to meet the deadline. How to start the Assignment: The Future of Work Read the article The Future of Jobs, The Economist 2014, Jan 18 and the world economic forum chapter to get an overview of how jobs are predicted to change as computer technology evolves. Then choose one job to study in more detail by referring to the appendix of the article by Frey and Osborne (2013). The future of employment: How susceptible are jobs to computerisation? OR the ACS report (tomorrow’s digitally enabled workforce). Look at the current trend “Microsoft HoloLens and Google Glass battle for the Workplace”. You will also receive hands on experience in using HoloLens so that you can plan for “The Future of Work”. For this assignment, it is suggested you should choose a job that is predicted to be more likely to be computerised e.g. accountants, real estate agents, etc. These resources are available in Canvas under assignments and in week 6 and as well in Canvas under assignments. Start your analysis by conducting research to understand the nature of the job you have chosen. You might interview people working in the profession you have chosen to understand the job in enough depth to complete the assignment. Your initial objective is to be able to model the ‘as-is’ situation of the job. You should for example identify the activities that limit productivity the most. Once you have gained a good understanding of the job you have chosen, you should systematically evaluate the potential of different kinds of information systems that could be applied to improve the job. The different types of information systems that could provide a solution should include the weekly topics in ISO e.g. Decision making, online business, business intelligence, enterprise computing (ERP, SCM, CRM), cloud computing, self-service, etc. The solutions for improvement at a high level could be grouped as: automation, information management or transformation. Synthesise your analysis by developing a ‘to-be’ picture of how you see the job at some time in the future. The time frame is flexible and may be five, ten, twenty or thirty years into the future. Tell a story to describe the change from the old state to the new. There could be a number of options or scenarios that you could explore. http://time.com/4871245/microsoft-hololens-workplace/ Visio-BPMN Diagram (As Is).vsdx Information Systems in Organisations – As Is - BPMN Diagram H ot el W eb si te Cu st om er H ot el Co nc ie rg e H ot el G ue st s H ot el R eq ue st Sy st em M ai nt en an ce St af f Process Booking via Website?
