SBM4201 System Analysis and Design Page 1 of 1 SBM4201 System Analysis and Design Semester 1, 2018 Portfolio Assessment Portfolio No.: 3 Group/individual: Individual Assignment Weighting: 10% Question one: Case Study High Education College (HEC) is an educational institute provides different courses in information technology. The institute wants to develop and deploy new Online Learning System (OLS). The OLS required to install and configure email, web, database and management servers to provide the required services such as emails for staff and students, web page and database management system. In addition, the networking infrastructure must be established to provide communication and networking facilities with the required security and system availability. Different types of network devices and support servers including networking switches and routers must be installed and configured with all the required cabling services. Security devices and backup services are required to improve the system performance. The institute wants to develop two online learning systems, Undergraduate Learning System (ULS) and Postgraduate Learning System (PLS). The software developers at the IT department assigned the task of developing both learning systems from scratch within 1 year and 4 months. Task: The Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) identifies all the activities required to build, launch, and maintain an information system. Discuss the six core processes of the SDLC required to develop the OLS project for the HEC. You have to provide detailed information regarding each core processing activity. Your answer should consider Work Break Down (WBS), sequence of activities and the dependencies of those activities. In addition, you have to used modeling, use cases and other required techniques and tools with justification.

Introduction
The aim of the report is to present system development life cycle or SDLC process for the proposed OLS or the Online Learning System for the HEC or High Education College. The project consists of the install
ation and configuration of web, email, database and management servers. The servers will be used for different services provided to different groups of users. For example, the staffs and students will require the email server, the web server and the database servers will be used by different users. Other than the servers, the project is also concerned about setting up and implementing a network infrastructure.
There will be two OLSs developed for the HEC. The ULS or the Undergraduate Learning System and the PLS or the Postgraduate Learning System. The project has been scheduled in such a way that the software developers of the IT department of the institute can finish it within the next 1 year and 4 months.
In the following sections of the report the detailed SDLC processes for the proposed information system, project schedule, WBS, and Use case diagrams.
SDLC Process
System Development Life Cycle or SDLC has six core processes for developing and implementing an information system. The six core processes for developing the OLS having the two subsystems ULS and PLS are described below.
1. Problem Identification
To start a project, it first needs to find the problems being targeted by an information system. In the problem identification process, the main aim of the project is determined. It also includes a feasibility study and analysis. That helps in determining whether the project should be undertaken or not. Along with the problem, possible solutions are also considered. An economic feasibility study helps to understand which option is suitable solution for the problem (Dennis, Wixom, & Roth, 2014).
2. Project Planning
The project planning process covers all aspects of the project management and the system planning. It determines how the proposed information system will be used to solve the problem. Project scheduling, activity details, sequencing of activities etc. are planned by this process. It is the responsibility of the project manager to create a detailed project management report. Other than the scheduling, it also covers planning for risk management, quality assurance and so on...
