Why is it that a 1-year-old likes to play Peek-a-Boo, but a 7-year-old
thinks it is silly?
A concept in Developmental Psychology
called Object Permanence explains this
behaviour quite well. Object Permanence is the awareness that people and objects in our
surroundings continue to exist even when they are not visible to us; a 1-year-old child has yet
to develop Object Permanence.
This concept is a part of Jean Piaget's theory of Cognitive Development, which outlays
the different stages that a developing child goes through in the development of cognition. A
1-year-old is in the first stage called the Sensorimotor stage which lasts from birth to 2 years
of age and Object permanence has not developed. When playing Peek-a-Boo, the young child
a person hides their face the 1-year-old is unaware that it still exists and thus is pleasantly
surprised on seeing it again. Peek-a-Boo seems pointless and unentertaining to a 7-year-old
who know very well that the person is right there just with hands on the face.
