In this lab, you will: · Explore Amazon Web Services · Explore Google Cloud Platform · Contrast the different services Materials Required This lab requires the following: · Computer with Windows 10/8/7 and Internet access Lab Preparation Before the lab begins, verify Windows computer works and has Internet access ESTIMATED COMPLETION TIME: 30 MINUTES Activity Background On network diagrams, the Internet is frequently drawn as a cloud, where you can access information stored on web servers around the world. This cloud concept captured something essential about modern networking, and now cloud computing refers to the flexible provision of data storage, applications, or services to clients over the Internet. You might already be familiar with cloud storage services such as Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive, which let you store your own data on web-based servers. Web-based email is another example of cloud computing. Most cloud service providers use virtualization software to supply multiple platforms to multiple users. For example, industry leaders Rackspace (in its Private, Public, or Hybrid Cloud products) and Amazon (in its Elastic Compute Cloud, or EC2, service) use Xen virtualization software by Citrix to create virtual environments for their customers. Cloud computing covers a broad range of services from hosting websites and database servers to providing virtual servers for collaboration or software development. All these services have the following features in common: · on-demand—Services, applications, and storage in a cloud are available to users at any time, upon the user’s request. · cross-platform—Clients of all types, including smartphones, laptops, desktops, thin clients, and tablet computers, can access services, applications, and storage in a cloud, no matter what operating system they run or where they are located, as long as they have a network connection. · consolidated—Host computers in the cloud provide multiple virtual machines, resources such as disk space, applications, and services that are pooled, or consolidated. For example, a single cloud computing provider can host hundreds of websites for hundreds of different customers on just a few servers. This is called a multi-tenant service model. · metered—Everything offered by a cloud computing provider, including applications, desktops, storage, and other services, is measured. A provider might limit or charge by the amount of bandwidth, processing power, storage space, or client connections available to customers. · elastic—Services and storage capacity can be quickly and dynamically—sometimes even automatically—scaled up or down. In other words, they are elastic. The elasticity of cloud computing means that storage space can be increased or reduced, and that applications and clients can be added or removed, as needed. For example, if your database server in the cloud is running out of hard disk space, you can upgrade your subscription to expand it yourself, without your having to alert the service provider. The amount of space you can add and the flexibility with which it can be added depend on your agreement with the service provider. In this lab, you first learn about Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and compare the two suites of services. Activity Part 1: Research Amazon Web Services Follow these steps to investigate Amazon Web Services: 1. Open your web browser and visit Amazon Web Services at aws.amazon.com. 2. Click the Products tab. See Figure 1. How many products does Amazon offer? Figure 1: AWS Products Offerings 3. Now visit aws.amazon.com/free. How many options are available at no cost? 4. Are the free offerings at Amazon enough to set up your own cloud services for yourself or your own clients? Why or why not? 5. Now compare the free Amazon services with the services offered as a Free Trial. What offerings do they let you try on a limited basis? 6. Visit aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing. What are the four ways that you can subscribe to the elastic computing cloud service? 7. Click each of the types of hosting and make a note of the least expensive option available. You will use this information later in the lab. Activity Part 2: Explore Google Cloud Platform Follow these steps to investigate the Google Cloud Platform: 1. Now visit cloud.google.com. 2. Click the Products tab (see Figure 2). How many offerings does Google have? Figure 2: Google Cloud Products Offerings 3. Visit cloud.google.com/free. Describe the products and services that Google offers for its Free Tier. 4. Describe what you can do with the Google Free Tier. 5. Now visit cloud.google.com/compute/pricing and make a note of what Google charges for their entry level VM. 6. What types of pricing options does Google offer for subscriptions to their cloud service? Activity Part 3: Compare AWS and GCP Answer the following questions to compare AWS and GCP: 1. Which service provides the strongest free offerings, AWS or GCP? Explain your answer. 2. Is it possible to participate in the free offerings of AWS without providing your credit card information? Why is this important? 3. Is it possible to participate in the Free Tier of GCP without providing your credit card information? How do you sign up for the Free Tier? 4. If one of your clients wants to develop a new web presence, which service would you recommend, AWS or GCP? Explain your answer. 5.
