Kati Paul // ENGL 101 001 Summer 19 Project 3: Final Portfolio & Reflection 100 points (20% of your ENGL 101 course grade) Assignment Overview The main purpose of this course was to help you develop your skills as an academic writer. Reflecting on learning experiences and making plans for future growth is an important step in this process. For this assignment, you will compose a reflective portfolio of your learning in this course. The portfolio will consist of three sections, each requiring you to look back and look forward as you consider some aspect of this course. Rather than writing a traditional essay, you will compile your reflective portfolio on a digital platform that allows you to use visual space and elements of design to represent your ideas. You will incorporate photos that demonstrate and illustrate your ideas. You may find pictures any way you like, including searching on Google. Be creative! Section 1: Course Goals and Objectives The University of Arizona English Department has compiled a series of goals and objectives that outline what each student should be able to do after finishing the Foundations writing courses (ENGL 101 and 102). There are four goals, each with accompanying objectives that explain the goals more. In this section, you will rewrite and explain the course goals, using them to explain what academic writing is and is not. For each goal you will: - Rewrite the goal, starting with the phrase “Academic writers are able to…” - In paragraph form, rewrite the objectives under that goal. - Explain why mastering this goal is important for academic writing. - Include at least one picture that illustrates the goal. Section 2: Personal Growth as an Academic Writer The course goals and objectives give structure and context for the assignments and activities we have been doing in class. In this section, you will identify and explain two ways you have grown as an academic writer and/or reader during this course. You will demonstrate your growth by referring to and quoting from at least two artifacts of your own writing from this course. You will connect your growth to specific course goals and objectives. It is up to you how you want to organize this information. You may write in paragraphs, bullet points, etc, but you should be thorough. One way to do this is to create two parts, one for each way you have grown. Other requirements: Kati Paul // ENGL 101 001 Summer 19 - Cite your personal artifacts using APA citations. - Use an in-text citation after you quote from or describe your own writing. - Include a full reference at the end of this section. - Pictures are optional in this section. Section 3: Explanation of Key Terms We discussed five key terms during this course (literacy, genre, rhetorical situation, discourse, discourse community). Being able to understand and apply these key terms will help you succeed in academic writing across many disciplines. In this final section, you will define four of the five key terms. You will consider how these terms and concepts are used by academic writers/readers in your field. For each key term (4 of the 5 terms listed on the syllabus) you will: - Define the term in your own words. - Explain how you could apply your knowledge of the term to your future work in your major. - Include at least one picture that illustrates the term. Connect at least two of the terms to something from the previous sections (either a course goal or something you learned). Format Requirements You may use any of the following digital platforms: ● Google Slides or Powerpoint ● Prezi ● Piktochart ● Adobe Spark Your portfolio must include all three sections. Each section will require multiple slides/pages. You may include text, graphics, photos, or anything else that helps you complete each section. You are responsible for making sure your portfolio is sharable. Each platform has a different process for publishing or sharing your work. To turn in your portfolio, you will submit a document to D2L that includes: - A functioning link to your portfolio on your platform of choice. - A 300 word author’s note explaining the visual choices you made in your portfolio. Course Objectives After completing this project, and its associated course module, you will have made progress towards the following student learning objectives: ● 1A. identify the purposes of, intended audiences for, and arguments in a text, as situated within particular cultural, economic, and political contexts. ● 1C. analyze how genres shape reading and composing practices. http://slides.google.com/ https://prezi.com/ https://piktochart.com/ https://spark.adobe.com/ Kati Paul // ENGL 101 001 Summer 19 ● 2C. incorporate evidence, such as through summaries, paraphrases, quotations, and visuals. ● 2E. support ideas or positions with compelling discussion of evidence from multiple sources. ● 3F. reflect on their progress as academic writers. ● 4A. follow appropriate conventions for grammar, punctuation, and spelling, through practice in composing and revising. ● 4E. apply citation conventions systematically in their own work.
