Marilyn Strathern, an anthropologist who does research in New Guinea posits that the Mt. Hagener populations she studies do not conceive of themselves as individuals or bounded units, but as “dividuals” or partible assemblages of the multiple social relations in which they participate (Strathern 1984, 1988).
