1. What does 'manufacturing consent' refer to?
This concept was coined by Chomsky based on the earlier coined word ‘manufacture consent’ by Walte
r Lippman.
Chomsky focused upon the power as also the propaganda behind the media esp. corporate media that is nothing but
a profit driven business working only in the best interests of the elite and dominant groups of the society.
2. Why is manufacturing consent important in a democratic society?
Chomsky opined that propaganda is an integral part of democracy in just the same way as violence is used in
effective dictatorship. He believed that most of the democratic populace are just followers (around 80%) as compared
to the other 20% being thought leaders or thinkers. This huge group needs manufacturing of consent for the
democracy to run efficiently because there needs to be a monitoring & control mechanism; either the media driven
propaganda on one side or force on the other side.
3. Whose consent is being manufactured?
As stated above, it is the 80% political class people whose consent is being manufactured.
4. What was Chomsky's methodology in studying the manufacture of consent, and what are the examples he

The methodology was mostly case study based and observational. He cited two examples of Cambodia & East Timor
