Microsoft Word - ITECH2301_Ass2.doc Network Design Assignment ITECH2301-Network Architecture and Design CRICOS Provider No. 00103D itech2301_ass2.doc- Network Design Assignment, Semester 1, 2020 Page 1 of 4 Due Date Week 11 on Friday at 23:55 Worth 20% (Marked out of 100 marks) Type Type A Assessment Objective  The report helps you grasp the fundamental concept of network design and acquire the knowledge on the techniques required for developing both logical and physical network designs.  The presentation enables presentation, oral communication and team skills to be exercised as well as providing an opportunity to research a specific topic.  Learning Outcomes Assessed:  K4. Describe the technologies and architecture of LANs, Wireless LANs and WANs.  K5. Identify the principles of LAN design.  A1. Analyse and design LAN architecture for organisational requirements.  S1- Analyse data communication and networking technologies in today's Internet. Network Design Case Assume Ballarat Technology Park, Mt Helen Campus, Federation University, Australia owns 300 employees with a 150-computer network. The park has two adjacent buildings: (i) a five- story office building comprising 120 rooms and (ii) a single-story administration building with 20 rooms. The office building houses 120 computers, with additional 30 computers in the administration building. The current network is old and needs to be replaced. The new network will house a data centre, the e-commerce edge, and 12 printers. 10 printers will be installed in the different rooms of the office building, while the other two are to be installed in the administration building. An employee is allowed to have printing service with any printer through the new network. Employees will bring their own mobile devices (e.g., laptops, smartphones, tablets) to work. Employees will use them to access required information such as their work email, required documents, and Internet through wireless communication facilities (Wi-Fi access points). Note, there are no other campuses, so you can omit WAN access. You will need to make some assumptions, so be sure to document your assumptions and explain why you have designed the network in this way. Network Design Assignment ITECH2301-Network Architecture and Design CRICOS Provider No. 00103D itech2301_ass2.doc- Network Design Assignment, Semester 1, 2020 Page 2 of 4 Requirements There are two parts of the requirements for this assignment – a) Report and b) Presentation. Hand drawn layouts for both logical and physical designs are fine. However, if you like, you would use ConceptDraw (https://conceptdraw.en.softonic.com/) or SmartDraw (www.smartdraw.com) or any other network design software to draw the layout of logical and physical network designs. a) Report [70 marks] The report should be no more than 10 pages and needs to consider the following design tasks: Design Tasks: T1. Using the building-block network design process, develop a logical design of the new network for this enterprise campus that considers the seven network architecture components. Remember to consider the expected growth of the company. For the logical design, you need to consider the following items: [25 marks] 1. Network architecture components 2. Application systems 3. Network users 4. Categorizing network needs 5. Deliverables T2. Design the physical design of the network based on the logical design completed in Task T1. Note, you do not need to develop an alternative design. For the physical design, you need to consider the following items: [25 marks] 1. Designing client and servers 2. Designing circuits 3. Network design tools 4. Deliverables T3. Briefly describe how you will minimise the interference from Wi-Fi access points (APs) on different floors. [10 marks] T4. You will make some assumptions; therefore, document your assumptions and explain why you have designed the network in this way. [10 marks] Network Design Assignment ITECH2301-Network Architecture and Design CRICOS Provider No. 00103D itech2301_ass2.doc- Network Design Assignment, Semester 1, 2020 Page 3 of 4 b) Presentation [3O marks] You need to produce a presentation consisting of eight PowerPoint slides based on your report and the relevant assessment criteria. The presentation time is 10 minutes. The presentation will be given in Week 12's timetabled tutorial. Online students can provide the presentations through either an appropriate online video conferencing technique (e.g., Skype) or adding voice-over to their PowerPoint presentation slides. Submission You need to submit two files – (i) your assignment report in either Microsoft Word or PDF format and (ii) presentation slides. Please create a zip file, namely Assignment2.zip using these two files, and submit it via Moodle. Please refer to the “Course Description” for information regarding late assignments, extensions, special consideration, and plagiarism. 1. Introduction
The network development for two adjacent buildings of Mt Helen Campus will require a LAN implementation for all its rooms and employees. This network is currently having 150 systems and these systems are distributed in different rooms of both buildings. The outdated network implementation for this campus makes requirement to completely change it develops a complete new network with easy wireless connections and use of internet on all developed systems. The WAN implementation is not required by this campus, thus, the complete focus is on development of LAN with wireless connection facility. The resource distribution is also required by this campus. The sharing of printers is required by this campus for all its users. Each system will maintain internet connections. The implementation of BYOD concept is also provided in the actual requirement. The implementation of BYOD concept makes requirement of effective Wi-Fi connections to such tables and laptops. Thus, to replace the existing low speed infrastructure of this campus, the high performance network implementation is carried out.
2. Requirement analysis for functional and non-functional requirements
The network implementation for Mt Helen Campus is based on some important provided requirements. Some the provided requirements by the Mt Helen Campus are related to functional implementation and other non-functional requirements are assumed on bases of provided case description. The important identified functional requirements in required new network of Mt Helen Campus are:
· The LAN based connectivity among both buildings must be assured.
· Each system in new network must be able to make internet access.
· The Wi-Fi implementation for all users is essential requirement for both buildings.
· The sharing of printers to all the employees is also required by Mt Helen Campus.
The important identified non-functional requirements in required new network of Mt Helen Campus are:
· Resource sharing must not affect the security of this new network.
· Integrity among the developed network components must of high level.
· Consistent LAN and Wi-Fi services are provided by this new network design.
· The performance of new network will also be very high.
3. Logical design development
The logical design maintains the logic behind the actual implementation of any physical network. Based on the collected requirements from the provided case, following logical implementation is developed for developing the required LAN in both buildings:
All the important requirements like printer implementation and other device implementation are mainly considered in making this logical design for Mt Helen Campus. The implementation of server is not required in the provided case description of Mt Helen Campus, but without server any application execution like DNS, DHCP and email are not possible. Thus, implementation of this required server is also carried out for LAN implementation for Mt Helen Campus. The failure problems are very common with LAN implementation, thus, backbone devices are also effectively placed in the developed LAN design. The effective internet connections and resource sharing among both buildings of Mt Helen Campus is shown in this developed logical design.
4. Architectural components of logical design
The implementation of any architecture of logical design is not possible without defining the required essential components. The proposed logical design for LAN development to Mt Helen Campus also uses different architectural components for making its final implementation. The required architectural components for making this LAN based logical design for Mt Helen Campus are explained below:
· Router: This is the essential architectural component for this required logical implementation. The entire resource sharing and packet route are decided by this architectural component.
· Switch: The end user connections to the developed LAN for the specific building are maintained by this architectural component.
· Printers: As implementation of shared printer is requested by Mt Helen Campus, so, these are included as the required architectural component.
· Server: All data storage and application processing capabilities to the developed LAN for Mt Helen Campus will be provided by this server.
· WAP: The wireless connections to the implemented LAN for Mt Helen Campus are maintained by this architectural component.
5. Application systems of logical design
The LAN design for Mt Helen Campus maintains execution of certain application for its...
