This assessment is designed to improve student presentation skills and to give students experience in researching a topic and writing a report relevant to the Unit of Study subject matter. INSTRUCTIONS For this component you will prepare a report or critique on an academic paper related to Business Process Modeling or Business Process Management. The paper you select must be directly relevant to one of these major topics. The paper can be from any academic conference or other relevant Journal or online sources such as Google Scholar, Academic department repositories etc... All students must select a different paper, thus the paper must be approved by your instructor or tutor before proceeding. In case two students are wanting to report on the same paper, the first who emails the instructor with their choice will be allocated that paper (provided it is acceptable). Note: popular magazine articles, web sites and blogs are not academic sources. Your report should be limited to approx. 1500 words (not including references). Use 1.5 spacing with a 12 point Times New Roman font. Though your paper will largely be based on the chosen article, you can use other sources to support your discussion. Citation of sources is mandatory and must be in the IEEE style. Your report or critique must include: • Title Page: The title of the assessment, the name of the paper you are reviewing and its authors, and your name and student ID. • Introduction: A statement of the purpose for your report and a brief outline of how you will discuss the selected article (one or two paragraphs). Make sure to identify the article being reviewed. • Body of Report: Describe the intention and content of the article. If it is a research report, discuss the research method (survey, case study, observation, experiment, or other method) and findings. Comment on problems or issues highlighted by the authors. Discuss the conclusions of the article and how they are relevant to what you are MITS5507 Assignment 2 Copyright © 2015-2018 VIT, All Rights Reserved. 3 studying this semester. • Conclusion: A summary of the points you have made in the body of the paper. The conclusion should not introduce any ‘new’ material that was not discussed in the body of the paper. (One or two paragraphs) • References: A list of sources used in your text. They should be listed alphabetically by (first) author’s family name. Follow the IEEE style. • The footer must include your name, student ID, and page number. Resources There are a number of resources you can utilize for finding academic articles and you should make the most of these resources. 1. The VIT Library has access to an extensive array of on-line journals including IEEE and ACM journals. You can access these online Journals through the library’s subscription to the ProQuest platform. You can access this platform by finding the ‘ProQuest academic platform’ link on the StudyBoard@vit home page, towards the bottom of the page in the left column under the heading Resources & Services. 2. Please also refer to the link in the same section on ‘Scholarly Article Searching’. This will show you how to search or articles of the type required for this assignment. 3. In the same section, additionally refer to the link ‘VIT Library Referencing’. This link discusses a number of referencing styles. Different types of Journals will require different styles of referencing and citation, but this assignment requires the IEEE style. Commonly associated with Engineering and Science disciplines. This style is discussed in the document and provides examples and links to further resources. 4. Google Scholar ‘https://scholar.google.com.au/‘ is a separate google search engine that will help you search for scholarly articles (Journal articles and conference papers etc..). It will generally not have access to the resources that Proquest above does as these are usually paid sites. However Google Scholar does index an extremely large amount of scholarly articles located in open access conferences, Journals and academic web sites. Please go through the above notes ‘Scholarly Article Searching’ to find out how to use Google Scholar. Drop-boxes linked to turn-it-in will be set up in the Unit of Study Moodle account. Assignments not submitted through these drop-boxes will not be considered. Submissions must be made by the due date and time (which will be in the session detailed above) and determined by your Unit coordinator. Submissions made after the due date and time will be penalized at the rate of 10% per day (including weekend days). The turn-it-in similarity score will be used in determining the level if any of plagiarism. Turn-it-in will check conference web-sites, Journal articles, the Web and your own class member submissions for plagiarism. You can see your turn-it-in similarity score when you submit your assignment to the appropriate drop-box. If this is a concern you will have a chance to change your assignment and re-submit. However, re-submission is only allowed prior to the submission due date and time. After the due date and time have elapsed you cannot make re-submissions and you will have to live with the similarity score as there will be no chance for changing. Thus, plan early and submit early to take advantage of this feature. You can make multiple submissions, but please remember we only see the last submission, and the date and time you submitted will be taken from that submission. Your document should be a single word or pdf document containing your report. BPM Research Overview & Analysis Proceedings of the Fifteenth Americas Conference on Information Systems, San Francisco, California August 6 th -9 th 2009 1 Business Process Management: A Research Overview and Analysis Danny Ting-Yi Ho Stevens Institute of Technology [email protected] Harry Y. Jin Stevens Institute of Technology [email protected] Rajeev Dwivedi Stevens Institute of Technology [email protected] ABSTRACT Business process management (BPM) as a research discipline has been around for quite a while. Extensive research effort has been devoted to advancing BPM methodologies, techniques, and tools. Despite its continuous development over the years, little attention has been given to understanding the evolutionary process of BPM research. In this paper, we attempt to analyze and rationalize the development of BPM research through a longitudinal literature analysis. We collect and review BPM articles from leading information systems (IS) journals. Each article is categorized based on its demographic background, year of publication, research method, and research area. We adopt a meta-analysis approach in analyzing the data produced from a categorization process. Our analysis provides an overview of BPM research from multiple perspectives. It also summarizes the publication behavior in the field. We hope our work will help BPM researchers identify research areas that are important yet under-researched. It may also be useful in guiding the future direction of BPM research. Keywords Business Process Management, Information Systems, Literature Review INTRODUCTION Business Process Management (BPM) applications have become more widespread in recent years in response to the demand for more efficient, flexible, and effective business processes. Our research objective in this paper is to describe the subject matter of BPM research as it has evolved in response to environmental and technical changes. We are particularly interested in the difference in topic concentration and research approaches chosen by BPM researchers across geographical regions. Our work is based on and updates a previous Business Process Reengineering (BPR) study by Barothy, et al. (1995) entitled “Business Process Reengineering: Emergence of a New Research Field.” Their study, in order to give

critical Review of literature on business process management
Introduction
The purpose of this report is to review the literature on Business Process Management and its evolution with respect to the fast trending changes in technology and environment. It has rendered significant potential in cost saving and producti
vity. Business process management is a practice that involves a combination of modelling, execution, automation, measurement, control and optimization of the flow of business activities. The management system facilitates the goals and spanning systems beyond the boundaries of an organization in support of its employees, partners and customers. BPM came into existence after Toyota Production Systems organized business process as a combination of statistical process control and decentralized team works and analyzed each small process for future improvements. In BPMS perspective, a business is a set of processes and BPM improves those processes through various activities mentioned in the definition above. The scope of BPM lies in organizing work, process automation and analysis and in managing operations.
In the article “Business Process Management: A Research Overview and Analysis”, Danny Ting-Yi Ho, Yulong Jin and Rajeev Dwivedi have performed a literature review and analysis of the latest research in the field of Business Process Management and offered a summary on publication behavior in this area which intends to contribute further to the research areas in future. The authors have categorized the literature and selected an approach for data analysis.
The article explains the initial insights of the research on BPM along with research frameworks and opportunities. The authors use various methods, tools and techniques under a classification scheme applied to the literature to analyze it and perform a comparative analysis of the findings with existing studies. The authors have presented their analysis based on 37 journal papers from 10 Information Systems journals. However, the research study entails certain limitations outlined in the later section of the article. BPM is still a topic of research with several areas and opportunities for further analysis. This critique concludes with recommendations for further research area in this field.
Business Process Management Analysis Approach
The authors have majorly concentrated on the approaches taken by other researchers with varied geographical location for reengineering business processes in order to boost their effectiveness, efficiency and flexibility. The best practices are process improvement, process mapping and consistent improvement in processes and a major portion of successful BPM depends on their performance. The classification of management areas of BPM is outlined by the authors from six major studies in different time periods. Further, Process-aware Information Systems is chosen as the information system to support the practices individually as well as in group since is best suited for process orientation and this system allows process improvement through activity monitoring and process mining [3] .A PAIS logs events like audits, transactions,...
