MGMT1011 Organisational Behaviour

Assessment 1: Reflective Writing

Weight: 20%

Due date:

10am (Sydney time) Wednesday 24th August 2022

Submission type:

Via

Turnitin Only.

Task Overview:

The purpose of the assessment is to develop an understanding of OB theories, frameworks and practices. You are required to criticallyreflect (which includes interpreting, describing, and evaluating) 2 to 3 theories/frameworks (

see the recommended list below

) that youhave either found interesting, have a personal affinity for, or feel a sense of connection with. These theories/frameworks must becovered in the topics in Blocks 1 and 2 of the unit. Reflective writing is an opportunity to articulate what you have learned so it is not justa description or summary of these theories and frameworks, that you are required to evaluate. Hence, it is crucial that you read widelyand think critically about what you are learning or have learned in the unit.

Students should consider and address some of the following questions - but not limited to - for each theory or framework they areinterpreting, evaluating, and planning (which are parts of the reflecting process):

Are there aspects of the theory/framework you found particularly interesting or challenging? And Why?

Did you experience difficulty with a particular theory/framework? If so, what was the turning point when it became clearer and you‘got it’? Was this through an article, an activity, a video, a tutorial and/or discussion?

How does the theory/framework apply to your experience? (Please note this assessment is for the organisational behaviour unit sostudents need to link the theory/framework to their work experience, group work at university and/or a particular activity in theirclass).

Are there theories/frameworks that challenge your understanding or interpretation of this experience?

Does your knowledge of the theory/framework tie in with anything you have learned in the past or from another unit? Has it changedyour perspectives, or affirmed something you already knew?

How will this new knowledge guide my future attitudes and actions at work, in professional life or in career plan?

For the purpose of planning and structuring the reflection, it's recommended that students adopt the '

4Rs Model'

Major theories and frameworks in the first four topics

Given that OB is a first-year unit, it may be difficult for some students to pick relevant theories/frameworks for their Assessment 1. Please see below for a list of major theories/frameworks in the first four topics. Please note that these are covered quitecomprehensively in the textbook and lecture. It is recommended that students pick 2 to 3 of the theories/frameworks/concepts listedbelow. The first criterion of the rubric assesses their understanding of theories/frameworks so students need to demonstrate this. Pleasenote that regardless, students need to conduct research beyond the textbook and lectures.

Journals and practice-oriented outlets

Learning how to find, analyse and use relevant information from journals is a key part of the learning outcomes. While some articles areavailable in hardcopy journals, many useful articles can be accessed using electronic databases. You should ensure that you havemastered the skills of accessing, analysing and using such information. Books and journals can now be accessed by searching directlyfrom the Library Homepage

It is expected that you become familiar with the relevant Organisational Behaviour and Management journals and practice-orientedoutlets. The following journals and practice-oriented outlets (but not limited to) may be useful:

Journals

Journal of Applied Psychology

Personnel Psychology

Journal of Organizational Behavior

Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes

Assignment

1 Q&As

Q. Do I need an introduction and conclusion, and subheadings?

A. You are not required to have an introduction and conclusion. However, you would not be penalised for having them. Do keep in mindthat there is a word limit (1000 words), and hence having an introduction and conclusion means you have fewer words for the body ofyour essay. That said, sometimes the introduction and conclusion help the marker/reader to follow your writing.

Q. The maximum amount of words is 1000, can I go over this limit?

A. If you go over 1000 words, we would choose not to read any words after this limit which could mean you miss some importantinformation - essentially this might affect your final grade as a result.

Q. What are the marking criteria so I know what my essay will be judged on?

A. Please read the above rubric VERY CAREFULLY.

Q. How many references do I need?

A. You need a minimum of 4 journal articles. Keep in mind that in order to obtain a high score on this criterion, you need more than 4journal articles, and also APA 7th Edition style is adopted flawlessly.

If you find two articles from one particular journal, and use and reference both articles correctly, then it is counted as two (the count isbased on the number of articles, not the number of journals). Please note that the textbook, book, and news articles do not count asjournal articles. If you cite a textbook or book, you should still reference it properly. It must still be referenced correctly according to theAPA 7th Edition style, although it does not ‘count’ towards the minimum requirements of four journal articles.

If you are not familiar with referencing and the APA 7th Edition referencing, you need to check MQ’s websites(https://libguides.mq.edu.au/referencing/referencing-basics; and also https://libguides.mq.edu.au/referencing/APA7thEdition) or anyother useful resources online.

Q. Can I write in 1st or 3rd person?

A. 1st person please.

Q. What is the acceptable similarity score?

A. In assessing plagiarism, there are multiple factors we consider, not just the similarity percentage. However, from our experience, students with 15% similarity are at a greater risk of plagiarism. The best approach is to achieve a zero (0) similarity percentage. One wayto avoid this is not having a sentence or paragraph copied from another source. In other words, avoid taking a big chunk of words fromanother source. Changing one or just a couple of words in one paragraph may be considered plagiarism. You should try to use your ownwords to describe/explain. Sometimes a definition of a concept can only be described from the original source, in that case, usequotations – however, you should avoid having too many quotes in any piece of work.

To avoid counting words in the reference/bibliography section of your essay by Turnitin, it is recommended that, at the end of youressay, you use a sub-heading ‘Reference’ or 'Bibliography' prior to listing your sources.

Make sure you complete your work early and check your similarity score – and adjust in necessary – before submitting the final version.

Q. When is it due again and what if I need an extension?

A. 10am (Sydney time) Wednesday 24th August 2022. Late submissions will receive a penalty of 5% per day. All extension requests mustbe submitted via Special Consideration (https://students.mq.edu.au/study/my-study-program/special-consideration) and you need toprovide documents to support your case.

Please do not contact your tutor and lecturer to request an extension as they do not have the authority to grant it.

Q. I have many many many more questions….

A. Read Assignment 1's iLearn page which covers comprehensive information. If you have further questions, contact your tutor. Youshould only contact your tutor with questions that have not been covered in this Q&A and also on the Assignment 1 iLearn page.
