Part 1.
Shepard established himself as a significant character in American theatre with The Curse of the Starving Class and subsequent plays. These plays position him one of the most important American theatrical traditions. Curse has been compared to Jack Kirkland's Depression-era song Tobacco Road.
The characters in Sam Shepard's plays are presented with a seriousness and sarcastic comedy that is typical of many American plays. In the work of playwrights as different as Edward Albee , Arthur Miller , Tennessee Williams , Eugene O'Neill, and Lillian Hellman, the structure of American family life is a fundamental preoccupation. To make such a comparison of tradition is to say that Sam Shepard is a writer who is firmly rooted in the Old culture.
