PhD concept paper Health utilities required to calculate quality-adjusted life- years (QALYs) are often measured using instruments such as the three-level EQ-5D (EQ-5D-3L), with utility weights calculated using country-specific algorithms. There are no published Health utilities for South Africa. The impact of various country-specific algorithms on the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio in local health economic analyses is largely unknown. The objective of my study is to generate and publish a local data base of health utilities . The focus will be on the legislated 27 Chronic PMB conditions. The National Health is eminent and local database of health utilities will contribute to accuracy in local health economics calculations and accurate allocation of scarce health resources.
