  2. Sketch a rough V-g diagram (flight envelope) for your aircraft. Feel free to guess at parameters that aren’t readily available. Use your best engineering judgment. Distinguish regions of “flight envelopes” as they relate to aerodynamic performance, safety and structural integrity.

  3. Describe how control surfaces (e.g. ailerons) and the resulting aerodynamic forces would be used to bank the aircraft 45 degrees to the right. How many g’s would the pilot pull during this maneuver?

  4. Describe what would happen if the applied force on the vertical tail exceeded the allowable design limit? Is the Factor of Safety here less than or greater than 1.0? Outline the possible mechanical/structural response of the vertical tail in this condition.

  5. Assuming a vertical tail connecting bolt is made of hardened steel, what would be the applied stress at the moment the Factor of Safety is equal to 0.75. Hint: Think of UTS of hardened steel. Report your answer in both English (PSI) and SI (MPa) units.

  6. Research and briefly describe an aircraft accident/incident resulting from structural failure. What could have been done to prevent such a failure?
