Aromatherapy Lesson 3 This is just a cover sheet, turn to the next page to continue. Essential Oils Aim Identify a range of essential oils and their uses. INTRODUCTION There is a great deal of overlap in what different essential oils can be used for. For instance, Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, and Sandalwood are all excellent essential oils for insomnia. However, it is not necessary to use all of them, or to just stick with one oil. Much of the time when finding a suitable oil, it is a case of "the nose knows". Each person is an individual with their own preferences and sensitivities to odours, and they will often be drawn to the oil which they like best. For example, one person may find that the smell of Ylang Ylang is most enchanting while another may find it repulsive. If this is the case, it should be possible to find an alternative that the person likes from a range of oils which can be used to treat the same condition. Often aromatherapists attribute an individual’s attraction or repulsion to specific oils as reflective of their overall needs at the time i.e. their body is guiding them. For instance, Ylang Ylang is good for nervous complaints such as anxiety and insomnia but has little value for physical complaints. On the other hand, Sandalwood is both mentally and physically relaxing making it ideal for muscle pain as well as insomnia. It could therefore be deduced that a person suffering insomnia from mental strain is more likely the one attracted to Ylang Ylang, whilst the one attracted to Sandalwood may be suffering from mental and physical strain. However, aromatherapists do not just rely on oils that a person is attracted to. They need to understand the individual’s current situation - how a person is feeling mentally and emotionally, whether they have any physical complaints, any allergies they may have, why they are seeking help and what they hope to get from it. This type of information will help them to find appropriate oils for the person. They also need to build up a comprehensive knowledge of what types of benefits different oils can have on the human body and mind. Uses of Oils There are different possible uses of oils. Some people may be more responsive to oils than others, and the degree to which different oils can benefit an individual is variable. Some of the more widely reported benefits are as follows: Physical Benefits Relief from headaches and migraines – some oils can be effective painkillers or analgesics. The mode of action is to tackle the underlying cause such as reducing stress, improving blood circulation, and combatting pain. Oils which may help include peppermint for blood circulation, lavender for headache, eucalyptus for the sinuses, and rosemary for circulation and inflammation. Fewer aches and pains – oils applied to the skin or inhaled may help with aches and pains. There have been reports of oils be of value for lowering neck pain, abdominal pain, and pain associated with menstruation, pregnancy, and surgery. Oils considered to be helpful include lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, peppermint, ginger, turmeric, frankincense, and sweet thyme. Increased energy levels – oils that boost energy levels seem to do so because they are stimulants that increase oxygen intake into the bloodstream. Examples are those with zesty fragrances like lemon, grapefruit, eucalyptus, lemongrass, and peppermint. Better digestion – some oils may help with the digestive system and associated functions like calming indigestion, stomach aches or diarrhoea, or aiding digestion or foods. Examples include ginger, peppermint, marjoram, fennel, and lemongrass. Sleep promotion – it may be possible to alleviate insomnia and promote healthy sleep using essential oils. Whilst lavender is well-known for its sedative or soporific effects, several other oils can induce sleep including ylang ylang, bergamot, vetiver and Roman chamomile. Better hair and skin – many essential oils are said to have beneficial effects on the skin such as relief from burns and sunburn, improvements in acne, eradication of fungal problems, and improvements to the appearance of stretch marks, sunspots, or scar tissue. Some oils, such as rosemary, may also make hair stronger and thicker. Enhanced immune system – some compounds found in essential oils have antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties e.g. esters and phenolics. They can also be antiseptic or anti-inflammatory. These properties can help the immune system to fight infections. Oils with these benefits include peppermint, eucalyptus, ginger, lemon, myrrh, oregano, and frankincense. Help with hormone balance – in particular, some oils e.g. geranium, sweet thyme and clary sage may help with PMS in females. Others may alleviate symptoms of menopause e.g. geranium and rose oils. Some oils may enhance libido in males. Reduced toxicity – oils which act as diuretics (increase urine production) or aid with digestion can help the body to expel toxins more efficiently. Examples include lemon, peppermint, grapefruit, ginger, lemongrass, parsley, and fennel. Psychological Benefits Lowering stress and anxiety – the sedative and calming effects of some oils have been associated with reductions in depressive, anxious and stress-related symptoms. Some oils reported to be of value include Roman chamomile, lavender, vetiver, frankincense, rose, ylang ylang, and bergamot. Enhanced cognitive functioning – here the effects of oils are mainly with regards to better memory, attention, and concentration and this could be due to anti-inflammatory properties, sedative effects, and antioxidants which help with improved brain functioning generally. Some oils which may help include lavender and peppermint. ESSENTIAL OILS The following list includes some of the more widely used essential oils and the conditions they may possibly help with.
