INTRODUCTION
This project will test your understanding of the infrastructure of a local area network and your
ability to perform configuration and maintenance tasks on it. You will also need to demonstrate
proficiency in searching and compiling information using the Internet. You will be using many
of the skills that you have acquired throughout the course and performing procedures that you
have learned to implement solutions in a typical business setting.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this project are to:
 Plan network cabling
 Make a patch cable
 Set up shared folders
 Plan network fault tolerance procedures
 Research and compile virus information
MATERIALS REQUIRED
To complete this project, you will require:
 An Internet-enabled PC running Windows 10
 UTP cable
 2 RJ-45 connectors
 A crimping tool
 A cable tester

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS
Instructions
You have been hired as a network support professional at a company involved in
conducting weather research in three cities across the world. You are stationed at the
company's head office in Toronto. The two regional offices are located in South Africa
and Japan. Your duties are focused mostly on the Head Office local area network, but
you are occasionally required to perform some research for the other locations.
Today, you have been given a number of important assignments. The instructions given
below will guide you through the steps required to successfully complete the necessary
tasks.
Step 1. Planning network cabling for new workstations
Three new workstations are being added to the office. To connect them to the LAN,
they have been equipped with StarTech network interface cards, model
ST1000BT32. Using the Internet and your research skills (Hint: StarTech’s website),
determine the following information:
1.1 Assuming the ST1000BT32 cards are compatible with the office network, what
data link layer standard does the LAN use?

that will connect to a wall outlet. There is already a built in 85-meter cable
connecting the wall outlet to a patch panel and an 8-meter cable connecting the
patch panel to the hub. What is the maximum length of the patch cables that can
be used for each of the three workstations?

Step 2. Making a patch cable
Ask your instructor for the appropriate materials and tools necessary to make a patch
cable for one of the three new workstations. Assemble the connectors to make the
patch cable. (Note: this must be a straight-through cable, not a crossover cable). Test
the cable.
Step 3. Determining network configuration
The office network uses dynamic addressing. Your next step is to verify that
workstations are using this service. You are also requested to find some key
information about your workstation's network configuration.
3.1 Ensure your Windows workstation is running TCP/IP protocol and is set up to obtain
an IP address dynamically using DHCP. If not, perform the appropriate
configuration and let it take effect.
3.2 Using the utilities of your choice, determine and record below the following network
configuration information for your workstation:

Step 4. Setting up shared folders
One of the new workstations will host some weather information that will need to be
accessed and updated from other computers on the network. Two categories of
information need to be available - current conditions, which need to be regularly
updated by several meteorologists but should only be available to others for viewing,
and archives, which will only be updated on the local machine and should only be
accessible for viewing from other workstations.
Using your Windows machine, set up shared folders for the required information and
apply the appropriate access type. Use descriptive share names and groups. In the
space below, write down the shares you created, the groups which you gave access
to them and the permissions granted to each group.

Step 5. Planning network fault tolerance procedures
The workstation hosting the shared folders with the meteorological information
needs to be properly protected from all natural disasters ranging from hard-drive
failures to floods and fires.
5.1 In order to protect the system from a hard-drive failure so that access to the data
is available immediately after the hard drive fails (with no delay), what two most
commonly used fault tolerance methods would you recommend? (Hint: suggest
two different RAID levels).

5.2 Assuming the workstation currently has one hard drive installed, what additional
hardware would be necessary to implement each of the two methods?

5.4 Develop a backup strategy for the workstation assuming that the amount of time
it takes to perform backups is not very important, but it is critical that restore
procedures take as little time as possible. Assume the company operates 7 days a
week and there should be a daily backup taking place. In the spaces below

Step 6. Researching and compiling virus information
All three offices of the Weather Research company are connected to the Internet and
therefore are at risk of being infected by viruses. Antivirus software has therefore
been installed at all three locations, but new viruses emerge on an almost daily basis
and have to be looked out for. One of your assignments is to monitor virus activity
in the regions in which the three offices are located.
Using the services of Kaspersky Lab (http://securelist.com/statistics/), find and
compile the following information:
6.1 For each of the three company offices, write down the type of threat that was
most prevalent in the country where the office is located within the last 30 days.
Determine which office is statistically most vulnerable to which type of threat.
For each of the 3 countries and each type of threat write down the largest number
of threats detected per day in the last 30 days. (Hint: Clicking on a country in the
world map displays statistics for that country)
