Brief introduction about the case:
In recent years the number of cyber and ransomware attacks has been increased significantly and the recent case in the Colonial pipeline cyberattack in the year 2021 gained a lot of attention and impact many consumers and the entity as well. In late April 2021, the attack was so dangerous that it impacted the critical national infrastructure system.
Modus operandi of the case and impact:
The hackers gained access into the network of Colonial Pipeline Co through a virtual private network account which allowed the employees to access the computer network remotely. The VPN was didn’t activated for since long and also not used the multifactor authentication i.e. basic level of cybersecurity tool and the hackers breached Colonial’s network by only using a compromised user name and password and there was no activity performed by hackers before April 29 from the account.
