Distil the Central Information:
1. What is the central development issue of the Igniting Change Report?
The universal adoption of clean cook stoves and fuels is the central developmental issue of the Igniting Change Report. The unhygienic cook stoves and cooking methods are creating health hazards, such as breathing problems and skin disease, among the women. In the era of advanced technology, women are still now found in cooking open airs. The unhealthy cooking staples are leaving an adverse impact on the lifestyles of the women. The emission of harmful gases and poisonous acidic smoke incur breathing problems among women. This has resulted in two millions of deaths of women over a year.
According to the reports of the UNDP, 1.9 billion people should have access to clean cooking mediums to avoid further deaths or diseases (Cordes, 2011). Extreme poverty and lack of basic amenities are the reason behind the unhealthy cooking practises. The unhealthy cooking practises not only release poisonous gases but also affect the food. The cooked food contains severe germs due to the open kitchen. Children are affected mainly due to the unhealthy food cooked through unhealthy mediums. The article tries to underline the evident tensions. Hence, the central development issue, of the report, deals with the problems of clean cooking. Clean and hygienic cooking must be encouraged for reduction of health hazards.
2. Why do you think the issue is important, especially for developing countries?
The issue is fundamental as the issue teaches about the importance of hygiene. Various developing countries of Asia and Africa are witnessing several deaths due to the unhygienic practises of cooking. Women are especially prone to an unhealthy system of cooking. According to the reports of WaterAid, around 800,000 women die each year because of lack of hygiene, out of which 60% of the women die due to diarrhoea (Cordes, 2011).
Unhealthy cooking mediums are the reason behind diarrhoea. The developing countries have huge populations and lower GDP rates. Therefore, there is a presence of massive debt in the family. The families cannot afford gas cylinders and chimneys for better cooking options. In addition, low awareness among the people on the developing is another reason for the lack of hygienic cooking practises. Lack of economic development has resulted in the use of solid fuel around 80% to 90% in rural areas (de Lima et al., 2017).
In developing countries, the allocation of money is a significant thing. The families spend their income on buying food and other necessary equipment for living. The income is hardly spent on LPG or chimneys. The exposure of solid fuel and petrol has led to 300,000 deaths by burning. The lower economic development in developing is the primary cause behind the unhygienic methods of cooking.
3. How can it lead to poverty reduction?
The issue can lead to poverty reduction by engaging healthy lifestyles. Economically challenged people spend a lot of time collecting solid fuels for cooking methods. With the implementation of LPG cook stoves, poor people can engage their time into something economical (Cordes, 2011). They can use the time in finding part-time jobs for themselves, which would help them reduce poverty. Moreover, good mediums of cooking would help in enhancing the lifestyles of the people.
The time taken to collect fuel, often leads to less time in the fields. Since significant rural people are farmers, they can spend more time on fields and earn more income, if they adopt LPG gases in their kitchen. Collecting fuel reduces work time and reduces opportunities to earn more profit. Using enhanced cooking methods would help to save time for the rural people. The country people can use that time in other pursuits. Thus, poverty can be reduced.
4. In what ways do traditional cook stoves contribute to climate change?
The tradition of cooking stoves emits harmful gases. The rural people burn solid fuels, directly, in the open air. The burning of solid fuels emits acidic smoke in the air. It causes severe impacts on the environment. Global warming takes place due to traditional methods of cook stoves. The traditional cook stoves also result in burning of the forests. The emission of charcoal in the air is the result of the burning of forests.
With increasing population and traditional cook stoves, the heat is trapped with the atmosphere leading to depletion of the ozone layer. In countries like Cambodia, Togo, Democratic Republic of Congo, the burning of charcoal has resulted in the damage of forest canopy (Leung, Galano, Durand & Lee, 2018). It also affects the biodiversity affecting the several species towards endangerment. UNDP has stated that clean biomass cook stoves must be used to mitigate environmental issues.
