Assign 1 GEOLOGY Instruction and Rubric Melbourne and Rock Mass Part A: Melbourne Interpretive Geological Cross-section Submit one page in the format of the powerpoint template file provided. Any graphical and numerical working must be shown on the submitted pages. Values assigned to me are below. Any graphical and numerical working must be shown on the submitted pages. Part A & B are to be submitted as a single pdf file. Do not add any cover sheets or additional pages to your three page submission. Do not submit any additional files. Part A: Melbourne Interpretive Geological Cross-section Complete a geological cross-section for the three drill holes allocated to you from the Melbourne database. Use a vertical exaggeration of 10. Present the cross-section on a single page in landscape orientation. The content and layout of the section and associated data required is outlined in presentation slides. What material occurs at a depth of 10.0 m below the surface in the central drill hole of the three drill holes you were allocated? Refer to the previous site investigation report and provide a brief description of the geological characteristics of that material. Your description should be three to five sentences long. Use quotation marks if you are using the same words as in the report. Add this information to the bottom of your powerpoint slide. If you choose to add colour to the geological materials choose colours similar to those used in the Melbourne geology cross-sections provided, ensure that material codes are clearly visible and ensure that depth marks are visible. Restrict your graphic to a depth of -15m below sea level. The table below clarifies where the previous report uses different codes for similar materials. Confining stress value:0.24 mpa. You will need to be able to determine the following parameters to complete the assignment: 1. Geological Strength index (GSI)[providing the value to the nearest ‘0 or 5’] (using the methodology of Sonmez and Ulusay 1999) 2. Hoek-Brown strength of the rock mass at a given confining stress (3 sig. figs) 3. Classify the excavatability according to the methodology of (Tsiambaos. and Saroglou, 2010) 4. For the rock type in your example write a brief description of its geological origin. Provide a reference for your description. Geological origin of the rock type Incorrect answer Correct description but no reference provide Not clear but generally correct Comprehensible but not entirely clear or correctly referenced Well explained and referenced Week 1 Assignment 1 Part A Plot your 3 drill holes at the correct scale and print it out The purpose of the scale is to be able to see detail and to keep all horizontal and vertical scales (VE) identical for all sections. You need to show the ‘from’ and ‘to’ values as points with the lithological code between each point. You need to ensure the end of hole is shown if it is shallower than your cross-section depth.
